Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, has recently declared that the next game in the best-selling series is not likely to come in the next years since the political climate is not favorable. The studio’s decision to develop a sequel for Red Dead Redemption was partly motivated by the fact the Wild West setting was free of any creative restrictions, as opposed to a GTA 6 that occurs in the present.
Even if Rockstar decided to make the game, finding a subject that isn’t likely to raise eyebrows in the in our days is quite difficult since people are likely to be upset by any theme that they could decide to explore. The game would be attacked by both parties due to its heavy accent on satire inspired by American society.
The last thing that the studio needs is more bad publicity as the last few weeks have already been a PR nightmare. Several crunch time accusations have attracted heated criticism and the studio is working hard on improving its image. Making fun of conservatives is not something that would happen without repercussions while the liberals are notorious for their politically correct stance.
Since the company is not likely to release a new game in the next five years more resources can be spent on improving the experience in GTA Online and the upcoming Red Dead Online multiplayer component for Red Dead Redemption 2. GTA Online has already generated significant revenue and the mode will continue to receive updates for the foreseeable future.
It is estimated that GTA V has already grossed more than $6 billion since it was launched five years ago. Rockstar worked 8 years in order to deliver Red Dead Redemption 2 and in doing so it raised to bar for open world games yet again.
While a future GTA title may come at some point in the future it is likely that the action will take place in the past. Some even speculate that the GTA 6 may revisit Vice City, one of the most iconic locations in the series.
