Apple Wants To “Steal” Engineers From Qualcomm To Design Its Own 5G Modem For iPhone

Apple goes for everything and now goes for Qualcomm’s employees. In the last few months, the relationship between Qualcomm and Apple has cooled down, although the former company supplies the latter with some components since they are one of the leading mobile chipset manufacturers in the market. Apple considers that Qualcomm has a monopoly and want to put an end to it by building a factory right next to Qualcomm and “stealing” its engineers to design components for them, including a 5G modem for iPhone.

The conflict between Apple and Qualcomm goes back to early 2017 when Apple accused Qualcomm of a dominant market position. Qualcomm replied by ending its distribution for iPhone factories in China and the US. A few months later, Qualcomm said it was only business, but the war was far from over.

Apple Aims To Steal Qualcomm Engineers To Design Its 5G Model for iPhone

As we read in Bloomberg, Apple would have set up a team in San Diego, the home of Qualcomm, to develop chips focused on artificial intelligence and a next 5G modem for iPhone.

Qualcomm has been Apple’s main modem provider for more than five years, and with this move, they would lose a big customer. We’ll see how events unfold, but Apple’s movement looks like a definitive end of a long-term partnership between the two companies. In addition to that, this move reveals that Apple aims to finally design and manufacture all of its internal components for its devices.

In reality, Apple already does that with its mobile chipsets, both CPUs and GPUs, as well as with its MicroLED displays that are supposed to be under development, as we speak. Apple wants to “steal” engineers from Qualcomm to design its 5G modem for iPhone, putting an end to a long-term partnership with Qualcomm, still one of the most significant chipset producers in the world.

Nintendo Switch Online Might Boast Content Beyond Classic NES Games

One of the main attractions through which Nintendo attempted to draw public attention to its Nintendo Switch Online service was the addition of a catalog of classic NES games. In this database, the Japanese brand brings out the jewels of the past as in the recent case of Gradius, and the truth is that the company desires to explore as much of the classic NES games as possible. However, recent statements by Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aime have opened the door for titles from other Nintendo platforms to be made available on Nintendo Switch Online.

“We’ll see what happens next, but as you pointed out, we don’t even have the entire NES game catalog at this point. This content has yet to be optimized for use on Nintendo Switch. That’s something we’re working on very hard. Like you, I also hope to be able to play Metroid through the Nintendo Switch Online service, and we will continue to make content available in the same way,” said Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aime for Kotaku.

Nintendo Switch Online Might Boast Content Beyond Classic NES Games

“So it seems that we can draw two conclusions: first, that Nintendo’s primary goal is to make the most of NES, and second, that once this is achieved, it certainly doesn’t seem to look bad to take advantage of work done on other of its great platforms of the past,” Fils-Aime added.

We should also remember that one of the saddest news of the week came from the same Fils-Aime who announced Nintendo’s refusal to work on a mini version of Nintendo 64, as had been done with the NES or SNES consoles. In this regard, we could not rule out that it was the same software for that platform that could also leap Nintendo Switch Online, going through SNES before that, of course.

If the Japanese brand is so predisposed to enhance classic games content of their older consoles, which is something they have frequently demonstrated, it would undoubtedly be a more exciting alternative not having interest in following a route similar to that of the before-mentioned NES and SNES.

Microsoft Store Now Supports ARM64 Applications

Microsoft has announced support for ARM64 applications in its official store, the Microsoft Store. An exciting addition to enhancing the capabilities of the Windows 10 computers on ARM that the company markets in partnership with Qualcomm. Support has arrived with the release of Visual Studio 15.9, the new version of the development suite that includes a specific development kit and tools to create or convert from other formats these 64-bit ARM or ARM64 applications.

The possibilities are wide and developers will be able to create ARM64 applications by recompiling the existing universal UWP – the Win32 programmed in C++ and also the ARM32 that were already supported, but running by emulation. Microsoft says that performing the conversion will be very simple, at the click of a button.

Support For ARM64 Applications in Microsoft Store Is Fundamental For Sustaining Windows 10 on ARM

The partnership between Microsoft and Qualcomm to bring ARM architecture to the PC market with equipment that has the advantage of its total connection under the built-in mobile broadband modem LTE and a large autonomy taking advantage of the features of this RISC architecture.

The problem with this platform has been its low overall performance when running applications, emulated in Win32, the limitations and crashes of its Windows 10 S operating system and the lack of third-party applications from the Microsoft Store that kept a good part of developers away from this kind of devices.

On the other hand, there are hundreds of computers in the market with standard Windows 10, with Intel or AMD hardware, also connected by SIM cards, and with wide autonomy and in all price ranges, which run native applications without the need to emulate and without blocking other devs. Microsoft, however, knows that and now supports ARM64 applications on its official store to boost the popularity of its device with Windows 10 on ARM.

iOS 13 Might Come Out With New Emojis

Apple is currently preparing to release iOS 12.1. At the moment, we have arrived at Beta 5, and it should not take long until the manufacturer provides the final version. Then, we’ll be able to enjoy the more than 70 new Emojis iOS 12.1 would boast. But this saga won’t be the end of the Emoji flagpole yet. Also, in iOS 13 and its subsequent versions (iOS 13.x), new Emojis will be implemented. The candidates have been already published.

Although Apple is now working on iOS 12.1, the preparations for iOS 13 are ongoing. Now, we’re focusing on the new Emojis that might appear in Apple’s next year iOS version from which the fans expect many changes and new features and functions. Also, an iOS 13 concept has rolled out and dozens of fan-made iOS 13 wishlists, as well.

The Unicode Consortium has announced a total of 236 candidates for Emoji 12.0 for iOS 13. These are supposed to end up in the next year’s iOS 13 and macOS 10.15 operating system designed by Apple.

iOS 13 might come with new Emojis with more skin tones, animals, and images

Candidates for the Emoji 12.0 update primarily show different Emojis with more skin tones and skin color combinations than the actual Emojis, a dragon, a flamingo, a white heart, a sloth, and a few more.

According to Emojipedia, there will be a decision taken at the Unicode Consortium in January 2019 as to which candidates will actually end up in Emoji 12.0. Between January and March 2019 the whole process would complete. Just as with the last Emoji updates, Apple and other manufacturers are not expected to implement the new Emojis in their systems in parallel to the release.

Accordingly, the manufacturer, Apple, will probably take its time until autumn when the iOS 13.1 would come out. In the meantime, we’ll receive more news about the features and functions of the next year’s iOS 13 for iPhone and iPad.
