The Latest Tech Billionaire Looking to be a Media Mogul is Marc Benioff

When a tech CEO is asked nowadays how he or she feels about buying a news outlet you might not see the surprise in their eyes. Instead of dismissing it as a ludicrous question, it is more probable that the person comes with a very thoughtful answer. There are some of Silicon Valley’s residents that are quite intrigued about such an idea. Of course, there are others that vehemently oppose such a scenario as well.

This Sunday, some gossip started going around that Salesforce’s CEO, Marc Benioff, would pay Meredith $190 million in cash for owning the Time magazine. Actually, it wasn’t gossip, the news was announced on Sunday that the Time deal is happening. Marc and his wife Lynne feel that this is more of a family investment so it doesn’t have anything in common with Salesforce.

They were quoted saying that “we are honored to be the caretakers of one of the world’s most important media companies and iconic brands”. They aren’t alone in this kind of venture, as Laurene Powell Jobs owns the majority of The Atlantic, Patrick Soon-Shiong owns the L.A. Times and Jeff Bezos himself owns The Washington Post.

Officially, all three of the fresh media moguls pledged that they won’t interfere with their respective news organization, instead they will focus on improving the product side. Benioff is, apparently, trying to do something similar with Time. He said in a statement that “Lynne and I will take on no operational responsibility for Time, and look only to be the stewards of this historic and iconic brand”.

It seems that the leaders of the tech industry are focusing more and more on preserving certain fundamentals of our society which are currently in danger or under attack.

Facebook Messenger Added French Language Support To Its Automatic Translation Feature, “M Translation”

A few weeks ago, Facebook announced that it would soon offer video advertising through the Facebook Messenger app. Indeed, the prevalent messaging application, which already allows users to enjoy many features, will soon host video advertising, which will be displayed directly in the middle of users’ conversations. More recently, the group announced the availability of an automatic translation service within the Messenger app.

“In 2018, opportunities to meet people of other nationalities are increasing all the time,” a Facebook spokesman explained. As a result, the company decided to make it even easier for Messenger users to communicate with ease by offering them an automatic translation of their messages.

When a user receives a message in another language, Messenger’s virtual assistant will ask him/her to enable machine translation, if needed. If it is activated, all future messages received on Facebook Messenger in that foreign language will be automatically translated into the user’s default language.

Facebook Messenger added French language support to its automatic translation feature

Powered by an artificial intelligence-based system and fully automated, the automatic translation feature is a handy one in Facebook Messenger.

The new translator, dubbed as “M Translation,” comes as an addition to the already-established feature known as “M Suggestions” which allows Messenger users to complete their current conversation by adding other elements to the text. Enriching your answer with a sticker, scheduling an appointment in the diary, or even wishing “happy birthday” to a friend in an original and fun way are just some of the achievements you can pull off with “M Suggestions.”

On the other hand, the automatic translation feature is already launched in the United States and Mexico since May but now Facebook decided to make it available in France, as well. Accordingly, the platform is currently offering translation from English to Spanish (and vice versa) and from English to French (and vice versa).

Hard Reset Your Nexus 5X and Get Rid Of Any Issues

In case your facing any issues with your Nexus 5X handset, a hard reset might save you from a lot of problems. However, this should only be done when you’ve already tried all the other solutions without success. Here’s how to hard reset your Nexus 5X.

First, you should backup all your data, including images and music files, unless they are stored on a microSD card, because a hard reset would delete anything on your phone and restores it to its factory settings.

How to hard reset your Nexus 5X if you CAN access your device

In case you can navigate on your Nexus 5X device, then the hard reset process is more straightforward. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Go to Settings;
  • Choose Backup & reset;
  • Tap Factory Data Reset;
  • In case your phone is password-protected, you’ll be asked to enter your Pattern, PIN, or Password;
  • Choose the Erase Everything option;

After that, the Nexus 5X device would restart. Pay attention that the first boot after factory settings restoration takes longer than usual, so don’t worry if your handset is turning on slower than normal.

How to hard reset your Nexus 5X if you CANNOT access your device

While the method presented above is only working when users can access their handsets, there are cases when the Nexus 5x doesn’t respond to commands or whatever. In that cases, you can hard reset your Nexus 5X by following the next steps:

  • Turn off your Nexus 5X;
  • Press and hold the Power and the Volume Down keys simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds;
  • Once the image of an Android lying on its back pops up press Volume Down twice to access the Recovery Mode screen – confirm it by tapping the Power button once;
  • When an image with an Android with a red triangle appears, press and hold the Power button and touch the Volume Up button fast;
  • Then, the Android System Recovery screen should pop up;
  • Choose “wipe data/factory reset” using Volume keys and confirm with Power button;
  • Confirm the wipe “data/factory reset” in the next screen and select “reboot now”;

That is how to hard reset your Nexus 5X device if you cannot access your device for any reason.

Android 9 Pie Rolled Out On Nexus 5X and Nexus 6 Via Custom ROMs

Google is supporting its devices for only two years, so some older handsets can’t get updated to newer Android releases. Fortunately, the developers were quick to come up with solutions, and now Android 9 Pie rolled out on Nexus 5X and Nexus 6 thanks to custom ROMs.

According to XDA-Developers, the renowned community of devs for Android devices, a few skillful developers managed to come up with Android 9 Pie for some older Nexus devices. What’s indeed interesting is that they developed custom ROMs for the latest Google OS within a few weeks after it emerged on the market officially.

“Nexus PieX” is the Android 9 Pie custom ROM for Nexus 5X

Developed by a dev that goes by the name of “argraur,” Nexus PieX is the Android 9 Pie custom ROM that brings the latest Google OS installment on the LG Nexus 5X.

In general terms, Nexus PieX works smoothly and has all the functions of the Android 9 Pie, excepting for SafetyNet and VoLTE which are the only features that are broken at the moment.

Android 9 Pie comes to Nexus 6 via CarbonBeta ROM

A developer by the name of Myself5 joined forces with the CarbonROM team and release CarbonBeta ROM that brings Android 9 Pie to Nexus 6.

While the ROM works nicely, there are two very annoying issues. On the one hand, the mobile data connection is a bit faulty but works alright for most of the time, while, on the other hand, the encryption features is entirely broken.

If you can live with these issues, then you’d definitely enjoy this custom ROM that updates Google Nexus 6 to the latest OS released by Google, Android 9 Pie.

In conclusion, while Google shut down support for its older devices and you can’t anymore update them to latest releases, now, Android 9 Pie comes to Nexus 5X and Nexus 6 via custom ROMs.

An Accurate Classification of AI Technologies

Artificial intelligence has become a huge thing in the past years, and we know how it all is with landscapes, distinctions, and infographics: they all show how people think about AI. Here we’re not going to talk about these categories, since putting things into boxes don’t really mean we have a clear image about them.

We believe that what we’re about to do will be useful for those who are new to this topic, just as much as it will help those with some experience on their backs – they will all be able to start and keep a conversation about AI alive. We’re going to call this your way to pre-existing knowledge on this topic, a way that will let you choose info and even make new knowledge on artificial intelligence.

There are six AI paradigms:

Tools based on knowledge, which are mainly based on databases full of rules and information

Tools based on logic, which are the ones used for knowledge representation and for solving problems

Probabilistic methods, which are the tools that lets agents act in some incomplete information situations

Machine learning, which are the tools that let computers learn from specific data

Embodied intelligence, which is basically an engineering toolbox that shows a body that’s required for higher intelligence – we’re talking about at least a part of functions, like perception, interaction, movement, visualization.

Search and optimization, which make the most out of tools that let intelligence search with lots of possible solutions.

All of these 6 find themselves in other three different branches, called macro-approaches – Symbolic, Sub-symbolic and Statistical.

  • Symbolic – human intelligence can be reduced to the manipulation of symbol
  • Sub-symbolic  – it doesn’t really have a specific representation of knowledge given ex-ante
  • Statistical – this one is based on math and math tools in order to solve the sub-symbolic problems.

There are five problems that AI has been used for:

  1. Reasoning, which is the capacity to solve the problems
  2. Knowledge, which is the capacity to represent and also understand the world
  3. Planning, which is the capacity to set goals and then achieve them
  4. Communication, which is the capacity to understand the language and them communicate with others
  5. Perception, which is the ability to transform the sensorial inputs, such as sounds, images to information that can be used in different cases.

The technologies are divided into two groups: narrow applications and general applications. Of course, if you’re new here, is crucial to understand the difference between weak and narrow AI, strong and general AI and artificial superintelligence. The artificial superintelligence is a theory that’s up to date, the general AI is a goal that’s to be reached and the narrow AI is what we have in the present, and that is a set of technologies that aren’t really able to cope with the things that are outside their scope. Some of these technologies can solve a specific problem, some better than humans (we’re talking about the narrow applications), and others can deal with multiple problems now or in the future, some better than humans (we’re talking about general applications).

Which are some of those technologies?

Robotic Process Automation, which is the one that cites a list of rules to take into account by seeing someone doing a specific task.

Expert Systems, which is a computer program that has some rules to outdo the way humans make decisions. An example of this is fuzzy systems which use values between 0 and 1, and not the traditional logic, which only gives the 0/1 result.

Computer Vision, which are methods to get and understand digital images

Natural Language Processing, which is a subfield that deals with natural language data – language generation, language understanding and machine translation.

Autonomous Systems, which is another sub-field that is placed between intelligent systems and robotics – agile object handling, intelligent perception.
