MX Player New Update is planning to Add Assist for Video Games

Recently people started speculating that video player and OTT platform MX Player may soon be able to play Android games. The MX Player is a video player developed by J2 Interactive, a South Korean company and the OTT platform is owned by Times Internet, India’s largest media conglomerate. The platform is available outside India only as an offline video player.

On LinkedIn Times Internet posted a job opportunity for a games engineer with experience in Cocos2d-x. Cocos2d-x is an open-source software framework with a platform dependent layer. It can be used to build games, apps and other cross interactive programs. Cocos2d-x is an easy-to-use open source 2D very popular game engine. The assumption is that MX player will test the water with Android first as the job description is requiring “experience in building Android apps” besides “familiarity with Android app development”. Another demand is the knowledge to “integrate and optimize games built using Cocos2d-x framework into the MX Player Android app” as well as the expertise to build “platform capabilities to support ease of game development and publication on the MX Player platform.”

All this is leading us to believe that MX Player is planning on developing a game store with options of publishing later on.

With a large install base of 350 million users in India and 600 million users internationally it seems that MX Player is looking forward to maintain its progress and continue its growth.

In recent times late gaming seems to become more popular for these types of platforms and MX Player’s approach is different compared to Hotstar and Voot that are already streaming e-sports events. Hotstar is even planning to expand and get Twitch-like features in the future.

We recommend video games’ fans to take a look at Transition, the Devices 360’s gaming podcast. You can listen to it via RSS or Apple Podcasts.
