What Can the NHS Teach Us About Managing Costs and Efficiency

If there’s one thing the UK is proud of above all else, it’s the NHS. Providing medical services to everyone across the country when they need it, it’s something we’ve all used at some point in our lives.

Always in the news too, it was recently announced that the NHS was to deliver £22 billion in efficiency savings, in order to secure the best value for NHS services. These are obviously huge savings, and although you may be shocked, you need to remember that the NHS is still a business.

That’s why it’s important to look at the NHS as such, especially if you run a business. In fact, there are things business owners can learn from the NHS when it comes to lowering costs, and managing efficiency, which we’ve outlined below.

Records

One thing the NHS uses is electronic patient records. These allow the NHS to access records wherever and whenever they want. It also allows them to keep them updated and share them easily with other medical professionals. One great thing about these is there’s no worry of having to wait hours or days for medical records, or have the worry of someone forgetting to add something to them, or something getting misread. This makes them perfect for all businesses, as you’ll be able to access important records instantly, helping to free up plenty of time.

Staffing Costs

Sometimes, businesses need extra manpower, and the NHS is no exception. One thing they’ve done to save on money is clamp down on temporary staffing costs. They did this by applying caps on hourly rates and using mandatory pricing frameworks. In other words, if your business needs contractors, provide a pricing framework to them that works for you, rather than having one dictated to you, in order to save yourself money.

Demands

When it comes to demand, the NHS has a lot on its plate. However, if someone’s dictating a demand and quota that they have no idea about, meeting it will be hard, which is why the NHS has switched it up and had manageable quotas for different areas, which makes them much more manageable. This can apply to all businesses, because a one size fits all quota won’t work for all departments or locations, meaning everything should be judged on a case by case basis within your business.

Best Value

Finally, finding the right value for everything is important. The NHS do this by getting the best value out of medicine and pharmacies. With around £16 billion of spending on drugs each year, making sure they get more for thier money is key. Any business can learn from this, ensuring they don’t buy supplies without shopping around or striking up a better deal before signing.

Xiaomi Mi 9 “Transparent Edition” Would Come With A Never-Before-Seen Camera In The Smartphone Market

Yesterday, while Samsung unveiled its Galaxy S10 lineup and Galaxy Fold, the world’s first folding smartphone, Xiaomi also presented some more details about its upcoming Xiaomi Mi 9 “Transparent Edition.” According to the presentations, the so-called Mi 9 “Transparent Edition” would come with a never-before-seen camera in the smartphone market. Namely, it would boast a camera with seven optical elements and f/1.47 aperture.

Besides this particular 7P f/1.47 camera, which would be one of the three main sensors of the device, this Mi 9 “Transparent Edition,” as its nickname suggests, would come with a back case made of glass which would allow users to see some of the device’s internal components. However, in reality, those are not the real components of the smartphone.

Also, thanks to the Xiaomi presentation, we have the confirmation that Xiaomi Mi 9 “Transparent Edition” (or Explorer, as it might be officially named, eventually) comes with 12 Gb of RAM and 256 Gb of internal storage space.

Xiaomi Mi 9 “Transparent Edition” Would Be Available Only Across China, At First

As mentioned above, the most exciting part of the Xiaomi Mi 9 “Transparent Edition” presentation has been that talking about the particular 7P f/1.47 aperture camera. That 7P stands for “seven optical elements,” and it would be a premiere in the smartphone market. Until now, most of the high-end devices boasted 5P or 6P cameras, so Xiaomi would be the first to implement a 7P camera.

While Xioami did not mention which of the three rear cameras would boast such features, there are indications that the primary rear sensor would posses 7P f/1.47 aperture. That would be the camera with 48 megapixels and the Sony IMX586 technology.

As Xiaomi confirmed it yesterday, Xiaomi Mi 9 “Transparent Edition” or Explorer, as the Chinese brand might call this device, eventually, would launch soon but only across China, at first, where it would cost CNY 3,999 (roughly $600). Hopefully, Xiaomi would launch its Mi 9 “Transparent Edition” to the western markets, as well, later this year.

Galaxy Fold, The World’s First Mainstream Folding Smartphone, Costs $2,000

Samsung has finally presented its Galaxy S10 lineup and the world’s first mainstream folding smartphone – Galaxy Fold. But there is one big issue with Galaxy Fold. Namely, this device costs $2,000, which, nonetheless, sets a too high price tag for high-end foldable phones. That might turn out to be in customers’ disadvantage when other folding smartphones would start rolling out on the market.

According to some analysts of the industry, people would love to buy a Galaxy Fold, only that they don’t have the financial possibility to do so. And that could prove out to be one significant problem for Samsung which was hoping to revive smartphone market sales with its innovation, sales that witnessed a drop in 2018, for the first time in history.

However, the $2,000 price tag should not come as a surprise for us since Apple with its iPhone X lineup, for example, pushed the prices beyond $1,000. Accordingly, Samsung thought that Galaxy Fold, which is of a superior quality than iPhone X, plus that it is the first mainstream folding smartphone, should cost more.

Galaxy Fold Is The World’s First Mainstream Folding Smartphone

Galaxy Fold boasts a 4.6-inch display when folded. However, when you unfold it, Galaxy Fold turns into a tablet with a screen of 7.3 inches. In tablet mode, you can use up to three applications at the same time via split-screen functionality. Besides, it comes with two batteries, one for each side of the smartphone, and a total of six cameras.

Under the hood, it boasts 12 Gb of RAM, which makes it the first mainstream smartphone on the market to possess this amount of RAM. Besides, you can order it four colors, namely, Cosmo Black, Space Silver, Martian Green, and Astro Blue. Galaxy Fold, the world’s first folding smartphone, would become available on April 26th this year.

As for how the Galaxy Fold folds, Samsung created a particular type of display technology. Namely, the so-called Infinity Flex Display makes it possible for us to fold and unfold the device for as much as we want without tearing or breaking the screen.

Qualcomm X55 Modem Would Accelerate 5G Network Adoption

In 2016 the US-based chipset manufacturer, Qualcomm, announced the X50 5G modem which, combined with the Snapdragon 855 processor, would make 5G available to a whole bunch of smartphones. Now, the company revealed the so-called Qualcomm X55 modem which would accelerate 5G network adoption.

As regularly, the upcoming Qualcomm X55 would boast a series of improved technical specs and features in comparison with the X50 modem. However, the most noteworthy improvement would be that Qualcomm X55 would support both mmWave and sub-6 GHz spectrum bands, meaning that it would be a 5G to 2G multimode modem, as MobileSyrup reported.

That, at its turn, means that the future smartphones with Qualcomm X55 won’t require a separate modem for 4G, 3G, and so on networks in the regions where 5G is not yet available. That would be excellent in terms of production costs and reliability of the upcoming devices featuring Qualcomm X55 modem.

Qualcomm X55 Modem Would Accelerate 5G Network Adoption

“Contrast this to upcoming X50-equipped smartphones which will include both the company’s X24 LTE modem (via the Snapdragon 855) and the X50. Qualcomm didn’t specifically say whether it plans to integrate the X55 into its next flagship mobile chipset (presumably called the Snapdragon 865), but I think it’s safe to say that’s the company’s end goal with the X55,” reported Igor Bonifacic from MobileSyrup.

Besides, Qualcomm X55 would be a modem that plans to stay long on the market since it supports both Standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) networks, as well as both TDD and FDD operation modes.

That would mean Qualcomm X55 will be able to connect to every 5G network, present or future, as well as to any other standard without needing an additional modem to achieve the connection. Also, in short, Qualcomm X55 would be supporting 5G download and upload speeds of 7 Gbps and, respectively, 3 Gbps, while it would also support LTE download speeds of 2.5 Gbps.
