Intel Revealed Its SnowRidge SoC For 5G Network

At its CES 2019 press conference, Intel presented its intention to join the 5G race. Accordingly, Intel revealed it SnowRidge SoC for 5G network, the infrastructure of the Intel’s 5G cell phone tower base. However, this system is not dedicated to smartphones, but, instead, it is a wireless base station solution, enabling carriers that plan to offer 5G to improve the efficiency of the upcoming network standard.

According to Intel, this SnowRidge SoC for 5G network is made with 10-nm technology and has to be mounted on cell phone towers. Also, Intel said that the new chipset is similar to the silicon maker’s ‘Ice Lake’ computer and laptop chipsets.

However, this market is new for Intel which plans to reach 40 percent market share by 2022 thanks to SnowRidge SoC for 5G network. According to MobileSyrup, “a brief demo showed off during Intel’s CES 2019 keynote demonstrated how Snow Ridge is capable of serving multiple data streams from various types of applications, with total bandwidth amounting theoretically to 100Gbps.”

During the Intel’s press conference in the preview of CES 2019, the company only presented the new SnowRidge SoC for 5G network, but it has not revealed the potential partnerships with carriers. Therefore, Intel might keep this information secret until Mobile World Congress 2019 which will take place in late-February.

As reported by MobileSyrup, “since MWC 2018, Intel has been silent regarding its plans for 5G, with the only exception being the reveal of its XMM 8160 5G modem back in November. The new modem is designed to work with smartphones, laptops, desktop devices, and broadband access gateways.”

As regarding technology for the upcoming 5G network, Intel fell behind Qualcomm. However, Apple will most likely use Intel’s SnowRidge SoC in its future 5G iPhone which would come out in 2020 or so.

AT&T Would Deploy 5G Network Across 12 Cities In The US – Canadians Have To Wait Until 2020

The US carrier AT&T has just announced the imminent deployment of the 5G network in the country. It is ahead of other big companies such as Sprint, T-Mobile or Verizon, becoming the first to do so. At the moment, 5G will reach 12 cities in the United States starting next Friday, December 21st. With this news, AT&T fulfills its promise to launch 5G service before the end of 2018.

In any case, the fact that even mobile phones do not yet have native support for 5G has forced the operator to take other measures. As it has pointed out, it will work with Netgear’s Nighthawk 5G mobile access point, a portable device that creates its own 5G Wi-Fi network, so that it will be possible to link terminals, tablets or laptops to the 5G network to enjoy a faster connection.

Those consumers and companies that want to get closer to the 5G experience will have to pay for the access point in advance about $500, and then nearly $60 per month for a 15 GB plan. Before that, however, users would be able to test the 5G network free of charge for 90 days.

The 5G WiFi network would help users to navigate up to 100 times faster than current wireless systems. It will be possible to download a movie on a smartphone in less than three seconds. In addition to that, other significant advantages of 5G would be that you can have faster communications and with less battery consumption.

Apparently, all major US operators are planning to support 5G network in specific cities starting next year. Despite this, AT&T is the first to implement 5G in Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Louisville, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Raleigh, Texas, and San Antonio, reportedly.

And, in case you want to know when 5G would become available in Canada, we know, according to some earlier reports, that 5G network won’t come out in Canada until 2020.

5G-Compatible Smartphones To Come In Early-2019 From AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint

Everyone wants a fast and performant smartphone. Besides, as more and more devices are interconnected, such as mobiles, smartwatches, bracelets, cars, and so on, the speed of the mobile data connection becomes significant and makes the difference. This requires greater stability of connectivity. Accordingly, 5G is the next generation of mobile data connection.

Similar to 4G or 3G, 5G is a wireless connection designed to keep a large number of devices connected without slowing down their operation. With this network, you can have many devices connected.

This technology has already arrived, and the first phones with this new network will be on sale as soon as 2019. The telecommunications company AT&T said on Tuesday that it would launch its first 5G phone in the first half of 2019. Reportedly, it would be a Samsung device, maybe Samsung Galaxy S10, although no official statement in this regard has been provided.

Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint have also reported that they would launch 5G-compatible smartphones in early-2019.

However, for the time being, not every smartphone user would need the 5G mobile network in their day to day tasks. This new network will offer faster speeds when surfing the Internet and better connectivity, but for now, we won’t need so much data on our devices.

In addition to that, 5G will be limited to a few countries when it would roll out in 2019, so most people will not have access to this next-generation network. For this reason, companies such as Apple have confirmed that they will wait until 2020 to release devices compatible with the 5G connection.

The 5G would also be present in the internet connection at home, making us forget about cable connections without worrying about lower Internet speeds.

New Zealand Bans Huawei Equipment Used For Deploying 5G Across The Country

New Zealand banned a telecom company from using Huawei equipment over national security concerns. Wellington’s international spy agency forbid Spark to use tech giant’s hardware for deploying 5G across the country arguing that it might represent a “significant network security risk.”

Huawei has also been blocked by other countries as well, including the US, UK, Canada, and Japan. Also, in August, Australia also banned Huawei from rolling out 5G across the country, also due to national security concerns. On the other hand, New Zealand felt the need to clarify that the ban has nothing to do with the fact that Huawei is a Chinese company.

Previously, Huawei helped New Zealand build mobile networks, and in March the Chinese company and Spark conducted a 5G test on the test where New Zealand’s Parliament building is placed. After New Zealand announced its decision, the Chinese officials showed their disappointment saying that it is “severely concerned” about this issue.

New Zealand Bans Huawei Equipment Used For Deploying 5G Across The Country

“The economic and trade cooperation between China and New Zealand is mutually beneficial in nature. We hope New Zealand will provide a level playing field for Chinese enterprises’ operation there and do something conducive for mutual trust and cooperation,” said foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang.

The previous government in New Zealand adopted more conservative politics than the current leadership of the country. According to the Chinese officials, New Zealand had a close relationship with China. However, that changed, eventually.

Spark, which is one of the top three telecom companies in New Zealand, is also concerned about the decision took by New Zealand’s Government Communications Security Bureau to ban Huawei from deploying 5G across the country. However, the company says, that wouldn’t affect them much and that they will still roll out 5G networks in New Zealand in July 2020, either with Huawei or not.
