Opera 57 Brings “Smart News” Based On Artificial Intelligence and Netflix Recommendations

Opera 57 is the new version of the renowned Internet browser for PC and, continuing with his unique way of bringing surprising functions, it arrives with some curious new features, including “smart news” based on artificial intelligence and Netflix recommendations.

Opera 57 Bring “Smart News” Function, Based On Artificial Intelligence

Opera 57 releases what they have called “smart news” which is the same news function incorporated within the browser, but personalized via artificial intelligence. Thus, in addition to being able to choose the type of information and even sources that are most interesting for you, Opera has added the possibility of rating the news with the typical thumbs up or thumb down, so that the system learns what the user is interested in.

Of course, to make use of “Smart News,” it is necessary to accept the new privacy agreement since the Opera artificial intelligence system needs to collect some of your data to work. However, they claim that “Opera collects completely anonymous data.”

“We only collect information about the frequency and duration of viewing articles on the personalized news page,” Opera devs stated.

Opera 57 Also Added Netflix Recommendations

Netflix recommendation is the second surprising feature that Opera 57 boasts. These recommendations are provided via The Movie Database and are adapted to the country where the users reside. So far, Opera 57 supports North American countries and most of the European states, while other countries would be supported soon.

On the other hand, the Netflix section is a section dependent on the news feature in Opera 57.

Other new features of Opera 57 include several bug fixes and technical and stability improvements. Also, there is now an option to close the anchored tabs directly without having to restore them before closing them. TThe new Opera 57 is available for Windows, Linux, and Mac, and is downloadable on the Opera official website.

Google Duplex Artificial Intelligence Is Now Unde Tests By A Small Number of Pixel Smartphones Users

Google has finally begun to test its Google Duplex artificial intelligence in real-world applications via a small number of Pixel smartphone users. The AI system was presented during this year’s Google I/O conference, held in May, and which has been tested to a limited extent in the USA, where it has reached a small number of users on their Google Pixel smartphones.

As Google has confirmed to the news portal Venture Beat, through some Google Pixel smartphones, it is already possible to use Duplex to make phone calls autonomously with which the “app” can make bookings in the name of the user in some restaurants or hairdressers in the United States.

Duplex is activated directly through the Google Assistant and works only in the English version, for the moment, at least. Its functions include the possibility to call external businesses, not just Google partners, and for the moment they are limited only to restaurants, and not to hairdressers as Google announced back in May.

Via Google Duplex artificial intelligence tests, it has been shown that the service works through a button that becomes available when you search for a restaurant in the Google Assistant.

Google Duplex Artificial Intelligence Is Now Unde Tests By A Small Number of Pixel Smartphones Users

Among its features, Duplex only allows reservations for a maximum of ten people, and also asks for other relevant data such as the date and time of the booking. For calls, you use the user’s phone number in your Google Account, but you can select another one. The reservations made through Duplex are automatically synchronized with the Google Assistant and the Google Calendar.

The restaurants that can be accessed through the Duplex artificial intelligence system are still limited, and Google has offered the option to those businesses that do not wish to attend to this program the possibility of deactivating this option through their Google Account for businesses.

At the moment, Google is testing the Duplex artificial intelligence only among a small number of Pixel smartphones users in the United States, and just in a few cities. After the initial tests, the function will be extended to a more significant number of testers, according to the company.

Artificial Intelligence Startup “Silk Labs” Acquired By Apple

Apple has just bought yet another company, whose name is Silk Labs. It is a startup company specialized in artificial intelligence. According to information emerged on several tech news portals, this small company is able to make AI software light enough to integrate into consumer equipment.

The artificial intelligence is already a significant part of many products, including smartphones. Almost every tech company out there is struggling to develop better AI systems for their purposes so that Apple couldn’t keep away from this race.

While the Cupertino-based company is already working on its own artificial intelligence systems, now they decided to buy Silk Labs, a small startup specialized in producing software and hardware products based on artificial intelligence.

Apple Acquired “Silk Labs” Startup To Reinforce Its Artificial Intelligence Department

Founded in 2015 by three former Mozilla employees (Chris Gal, Jones, and Michael Vines), Silk Labs is a small startup with only 12 employees. The company explains that it “aims to bring visual and audio intelligence to connected products.” Silk Labs is primarily working on image and sound analyzing software based on AI, which has the particularity of working directly on a product, without an Internet connection.

Silk Labs has developed several scenarios in which its services can be useful. To give you an idea, the company has devised an intercom system that can identify the person ringing the doorbell (if the person is already pre-identified, of course), or automatically disable/activate an alarm based on the face the AI system detected.

As always, the Cupertino-based tech giant firm did not wish to comment on the reasons for this new acquisition. The same applies to the amount Apple paid for this acquisition, both companies keeping that information secret. But given the size of the start-up, the price of this purchase would not be extremely high.

Huawei Launched its New Ascend 910 Chip Based on Artificial Intelligence

Huawei seeks to give a new impulse in the semiconductor market with the launch of the new Huawei Ascend 910 chip with artificial intelligence. After Bloomberg’s publication on Huawei’s alleged links with the Chinese government, and the saga of incorporating spy chips, the company exhibits its commitment to artificial intelligence with new chips with machine learning capability.

In the midst of the controversy over the possibility that the motherboards of Supermicro’s servers may include spy chips, Huawei comes out and presents its new series of Artificial Intelligence (AI) chips, the Huawei Ascend 910.

With this step, Huawei continues his advance in AI, trying to compete with the big names in this industry, despite the attempts of the US government to contain China’s rapid technological evolution through increased tariffs.

But the Chinese government’s intentions are that, by 2025, 40% of smartphone chips to be manufactured locally, so it is allocating significant financial resources to its local suppliers to help them meet this goal.

The new Huawei Ascend 910 chip based on artificial intelligence is empowering cloud processing

In this sense, Huawei has presented at its annual partner conference the new Huawei Ascend 910, a 7-nanometer chip with machine learning designed for data processing in the cloud. Without a doubt, the new Ascend 910 is the Huawei’s statement for independence from other providers thanks to the new CPU’s processing capacity that’s two times larger than that of the Nvidia v100.

For the time being, the Chinese company has decided not to sell this chip this year so that it will be available from the second quarter of 2019. Another of Huawei’s novelties is the new Ascend 310 chip, designed for video surveillance cameras.

These novelties highlight the Chinese market’s interest in creating a technological industry that’s independent of foreign manufacturers. On the other hand, Huawei, which has always denied its link with Chinese government’s espionage scandals, hopes revive its sales after the decline experienced as a result of the US policy of banning and using their products.
