Chrome OS 74 Is Now Available With New Features

Chrome OS is Google’s Linux-based operating system, which primarily runs web applications. Recently, Google launched Chrome OS 74 version, after expanding to Android, Mac, Windows, and Linux. The update brings a whole new range of exciting features, including a new unified search, PDF annotations, and folder creation in My Files.

Chrome OS 74 delivers new search options, designed to offer an improved experience for device, web and Assistant lookups. Here are some of the features that got enhanced.

Search

The new features include displaying suggestions when tapping the search field and the option to delete any item in history when hovering over it.

Google Assistant

Google Assistant also presents some new assets. It originally was a floating dialogue, but now it’s part of the general Chrome OS search experience. It is now being displayed over a transparent background.

PDF Viewer

The Chrome OS PDF viewer now comes with integrated annotation tools, such as pen and highlighter, with the option to change colors and stroke width. Even more, now the PDF viewer also has an eraser and a redo/undo button.

The Chrome background now has a ”Customize” FAB that lets you upload your own image. New options include restoring the default web shortcuts and the pre-set wallpaper for new tabs.

Camera

Now you can plug in external USB cameras, such as webcams, microscopes, and document cameras, into the Google Camera app.

Besides these five main changes, other improvements have been made in Chrome OS 74. Here are some examples:

  • You can now save files and create folders directly from the My Files directory.
  • Linux apps can now play audio
  • Users can send feedback reports with system performance profiling data
  • Preventing popups from closed (or replaced) pages
  • Over the next few weeks, Chrome OS 74 will become available for all Chromebooks.
