Reddit Bitcoiners Are Still On High Alert About One Month After The Platform Got Hacked

As officially revealed recently, in mid-June, the Reddit social network was hacked and the data of several users, as well as individual email addresses and passwords, were stolen. The hackers got hold of an old database containing the users’ credentials. The team continues to research how to improve site security. In the meantime, Reddit Bitcoiners are still on high alert.

That was announced through an entry containing the hacking details. The most affected ones were those users registered on the platform before 2007, whose credentials, hashed usernames and passwords, email addresses and all public content, and private messages, were stolen.

Reddit is a network actively used by the Bitcoin (BTC) community. It shares announcements of crypto-related platforms and opens discussions on scalability and other critical technology-related issues. In fact, the founder of Ethereum (ETH), Vitalik Buterin, is a user who has been participating in this network since 2011.

Reddit Bitcoiners still on high alert

By email, the Reddit team has been notifying users who were affected and whose credentials may still be valid. The credentials of those registered on the site after 2007 were not compromised. However, e-mail summaries sent by Reddit in June 2018 were also intercepted. Data that links a username to an associated email address and contains suggested publications of popular and subscribed subreddits also fell into the hands of the cybercriminals.

While the Reddit team acknowledges that it was a major attack, it notes that the information on the site was not altered and that measures have been taken to protect the security of the platform.

In addition to user data, Reddit’s source code, internal logs, configuration files and other workspace files were compromised. As a result of this security breach, the team concluded that the two-factor authentication system (2FA) based on tokens is much more secure than the previous authentication system.

Also, cybercriminals could generate campaigns to steal money by promoting scams through notable Reddit Bitcoiners whose credentials have been compromised. At the moment, it does not seem safe to accept any investment advice generated on the platform.

Bitcoin (BTC): Win 1 BTC For Solving A Puzzle On Reddit – Are You Up For It?

Reddit users were surprised a few days ago with a new puzzle that will give away 1 Bitcoin (BTC) to whoever manages to solve it. The puzzle is contained in an image that features the Bitcoin (BTC) logo surrounded by words that allude to the technology that gave life to it. According to its author, the key to finding the solution is contained in Bitcoin’s white paper, written in 2009 by Satoshi Nakamoto.

The publication was made by an Internet user nicknamed Cryptogreetings, who accompanied the image with the phrase “A bitcoin is contained in this puzzle. Good luck!”

Additionally, in an update, the author added that the image contains, in logarithmic scale, the ideas that inspired Satoshi Nakamoto to create the distributed accounting technology:

This work is composed of the words from Satoshi Nakamoto’s white paper, in logarithmic scale. The ideas that inspired Satoshi to create a solution that would revolutionize the modern economy and industry in a scattered manner. This paper reflects on the elements that gave life to this technology and challenges the underlying security model. Hidden in plain sight lies a treasure hunt. A BTC is hidden in this work.

The last similar puzzle rewarded with Bitcoin (BTC) has been solved in 3 years

To verify that the reward announcement is legitimate, Cryptogreetings added a link to the address where the Bitcoin (BTC) was uploaded, which has received small transactions, as of May 19th, to make a total of 1,00152936 BTC, at this moment.

The addition of small sums to this address could be the result of testing by those interested in solving the riddle. The reward currently stands at $8,200 worth of bitcoin on the CoinMarketCap portal.

This announcement was quickly acclaimed by the community and the fact that the reward has increased some satoshis in just two days is reminiscent of the puzzle known as “The Legend of Satoshi Nakamoto”, which took three years to be deciphered and gradually increased its reward to a total of 5 BTC, to be finally solved in November last year.

A large number of comments have accompanied the Reddit thread in which the image was published, and in solidarity with the users, they have shared their findings to contribute to the construction of the solution.

If you want to give it a try, here is the 1 BTC-worth puzzle.

Ethereum (ETH) To Reach $15,000 By The End Of 2018 As Reddit Rehabilitates Cryptocurrency Payments

In an interview this week, Chris Slowe, the CTO of Reddit, stated that they will rehabilitate the Bitcoin (BTC) payments service that had been suspended at the end of March and will also add Litecoin (LTC) and Ethereum (ETH) payments. On the other hand, Reddit co-founder stated that Ethereum (ETH) will reach $15,000 by the end of the year.

Reddit to rehabilitate the cryptocurrency payments on the platform

In an interview with the Cheddar portal about the redesign of the Reddit platform, the company’s technology director said that users, who since 2013 can pay for the site’s premium membership with Bitcoin (BTC), will be able to do that again in the near future, but this time they will also be able to use Litecoin (LTC) and Ethereum (ETH).

In addition, the company’s CTO revealed that the changes made by Coinbase to develop its Coinbase Commerce, a payment tool similar to PayPal, had hampered the use of cryptocurrencies on the platform.

Coinbase is doing a great job, is doing a major revitalization of its cryptocurrency payment platform. We just didn’t have time to update our current API integration, and once the redesign of Coinbase Commerce lands, I think we’ll see the cryptocurrency payments again on Reddit.

The Reddit co-founder on Ethereum (ETH): Will worth $15,000 by the end of the year

On the same day Slowe announced new plans for cryptocurrency payments on Reddit, Fortune published an interview with the Reddit co-founder, Alexis Ohanian, in which the businessman was very enthusiastic about ETH and predicted its future price.

At the end of the year, Bitcoin will be worth $20,000. And Ethereum will cost $15,000.

Alexis Ohanian

The ETH prediction is quite ambitious, as the crypto is trading around $761, at this moment, according to CoinMarketCap, so by December of this year, it would have to increase 20 times its actual value.

Ohanian justified his position by saying that he is “very optimistic about ETH simply because people are taking advantage of it”, and referred to the great popularity of CryptoKitties, which raised a total of $12 million in their first round of funding.

In short, Reddit will rehabilitate cryptocurrency payments but this time will integrate LTC and ETH, besides Bitcoin (BTC). Additionally, the former Reddit CEO, Alexis Ohanian, threw an ambitious forecast on the ETH price, predicting that the Ethereum (ETH) will be worth $15,000 by the end of the year.
