Qualcomm Won A Legal Dispute With Apple In China With Severe Consequences For Apple

Chipmaker Qualcomm has reported that a Chinese court has judged in its favor in a patent case against Apple in China, and a preliminary order has been issued prohibiting the import and sale of several iPhone models in China. This court decision thus makes impossible for the Chinese residents to buy iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X models, even though it does not affect the phones launched this year, namely, the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max.

The news has caused Apple’s shares to fall more than 2% at the opening of the market, while Qualcomm’s shares reacted with rises close to 4% at the beginning of the day.

The decision came from the Fuzhou Intermediate People’s Court in China, the same court that this year banned the import of some of the chips from the chipmaker Micron Technology in China.

Qualcomm Won A Legal Dispute With Apple In China

Qualcomm, which initially filed the case in China in late 2017, has received the court’s green light. The court decided that Apple has violated two of Qualcomm’s software patents to resize photographs and manage touch-screen applications.

“Apple continues to benefit from our intellectual property while refusing to compensate us,” said Don Rosenberg, general counsel for Qualcomm, in a statement. But because patents directly affect the software, Apple can make changes to its operating system to prevent patent infringement, so if the changes come, they can continue to sell their banned smartphones in the Asian country without an agreement with Qualcomm.

The patents that made the subject of the lawsuit are different from those both companies are disputing in other cases in their broad legal dispute. In fact, Qualcomm also asked the US regulators to ban the import of several iPhone models for patent reasons, but so far US officials have refused to do so.

Microsoft Edge Will Finally Arrive On MacOS

With the arrival of Windows 10, the Microsoft team announced the arrival of Microsoft Edge, a much faster web browser that, at first, came to replace the classic Internet Explorer, but has gradually been reaching more and more platforms with a multitude of new features. Now, Microsoft Edge will finally arrive on macOS, too.

Recently, Apple decided to make a series of changes with the macOS, while Microsoft has planned to take their Internet browser to more operating systems. In the first place, Microsoft has implemented Edge on their latest operating system, Windows 10, by default. However, to improve security and user experience on their older operating systems, Microsoft released Edge versions for Windows 7 and 8, too.

However, the most exciting piece of information came recently from TechCrunch which announced that Microsoft Edge would officially arrive on macOS, but they did not reveal when is that going to happen.

Microsoft Edge to finally arrive on macOS

On the one hand, the date when Microsoft Edge will reach macOS is unknown, for the time being, since Microsoft has not yet revealed any official information in this regard. Thus, it seems that it would go for a long time and that until next 2019 we would not see anything new on this topic.

On the other hand, we also do not know the functions or the design that Microsoft Edge for macOS would incorporate, although we expect to see something similar to what is the Microsoft Edge browser is currently offering on Windows and other platforms. Of course, we also assume that Edge would incorporate the required elements to fit into the Apple ecosystem correctly.

Although as we said there are still no dates or official confirmation by any of the two companies, Microsoft or Apple, it would be quite logical to see an official Microsoft Edge version for macOS because, after all, there are many people who use other Microsoft applications on their Mac every day.

Xiaomi Surpassed Apple In Wearables Market, Scoring More Sales In Q3 2018 That The Cupertino-Based Company

The market for wearables, such as smartwatches or bracelets, is gaining more ground as it’s getting bigger every year and there’s more variety of companies launching their own products, but there are only two very different companies that are setting the pace for this industry – Xiaomi and Apple. Recently, Xiaomi managed to surpass Apple in the wearables market.

A recent study by IDC shows the evolution of sales of wearables and how Xiaomi surpassed those of the Cupertino-based company. Xiaomi sold more than 32 billion such devices in the third quarter of 2018, worldwide, 21.7% more than in the same period of the last year.

Apple doesn’t usually share a lot of Apple Watch sales data for any of its versions. That is why the data from the consulting firm IDC are of great help in corroborating what was already being speculated in the sector, that the smartwatches of Apple were gathering more ground, especially since the Apple Watch Series 3 has launched.

Xiaomi Surpassed Apple In Wearables Market, Scoring More Sales In Q3 2018 That The Cupertino-based Company

According to data provided by IDC, Apple sold about 4.2 million smartwatches in Q3 2018, which is a substantial increase over last year when they only sold only 2.7 million units.

Despite this spectacular growth, there is another company that has positioned itself at the top of the wearables market. With a very different type of business than Apple, the Chinese company Xiaomi, whose main characteristic is its supercompetitive prices, has sold more smartwatches in Q3 2018 than the Cupertino-based company.

The success is due to the Mi Band 3, a smart bracelet that sold to 6,9 billion consumers worldwide.

These two companies, Apple and Xiaomi, share the highest wearables market shares, with Xiaomi scoring 21.5%, while Apple only 13.1%. The other manufacturers of smartwatches and bracelets have not achieved so much momentum, Fitbit for example, managing to score fewer sales than in 2017.

Microsoft Surface Pro Slams Apple’s iPad Naming Itself The Real Computer Alternative

The Christmas campaign is approaching and the battles to be the best-selling device are emerging on YouTube. Microsoft’s latest ad promotes the company’s Surface Go by claiming it as the real computer alternative, somewhat directly attacking the Apple’s iPad.

In a short Christmas musical, Microsoft shows us a little girl singing and dancing to the sound of the advantages of Surface Go. Correctly, the lyrics of the song read like this:

“Grandma, don’t run off and buy an iPad. Now my dreams are big, and I need a real computer to do all the amazing things I can do. I would also like to learn how to write some code and help a nice manatee. The Surface Go is what I really want, to be the smartest me,” she says.

The Surface Go is Microsoft’s device that, in their words, combines the performance of a laptop and the portability of a tablet.

Microsoft Surface Pro Slams Apple’s iPad Naming Itself The Real Computer Alternative

From 449 €, with 64 Gb. of SSD and 4 Gb. of RAM, Windows 10 Home and a keyboard that is sold separately for 99 €, it is, without a doubt, a PC-tablet hybrid with Windows that you should take into account. Possibly, according to what Microsoft suggests in the Surface Pro ad they released on YouTube, the Surface Pro might be a computer with Windows for children.

And they are not wrong in comparing it to the iPad (not the iPad Pro), as both have a screen of about 10 inches (the iPad comes with a 9.7-inch display and the Surface Go boasts a 10-inch one). Also, they come with similar resolutions (a little more pixel density on the iPad), compatibility with keyboards and pencils, same weight, and the list of similarities can go on.

Whether or not the iPad is a real computer will have to be decided by each user. But there is no doubt that both Microsoft Surface Pro and iPad devices are in direct competition.

Apple Might Implement In-Display Fingerprint Sensor in iPhone 11

The design of the iPhone X has been revolutionary, prompting other brands to develop a reasonably similar scheme in their new equipment. But even though, in its latest iPhone 2018 models, Apple did not offer anything new, other than an increase in size and a more powerful CPU, it seems that they have been planning on some new features for iPhone 11 and the other 2019 iPhone devices., including an in-display fingerprint sensor.

According to a tech news portal, Apple company, based in Cupertino, in the US, would be seriously considering the possibility of coming with a new fingerprint reader.

Although it doesn’t seem to be anything new, since this security mode had already been included in its previous devices, the giant tech firm would introduce n in-display fingerprint sensor, a function that other manufacturers, such as Samsung, have already implemented.

Apple Might Implement In-Display Fingerprint Sensor in iPhone 11

Accordingly, the new feature that the Cupertino-based company wants to implement in their next year’s iPhone 11 device would be the in-display fingerprint sensor. This new functionality would form an integral part of the screen, with a technology that has been named “In Display.” However, that’s not a premiere since Samsung, and other manufacturers have already implemented.

All these rumors arise from the fact that Apple seems to be conducting some negotiations and deals with Chinese companies such as the O-Film, which would become the leading suppliers of components to develop and implement this relatively new technology in Apple’s 2019 iPhone models.

It’s a predictable move since, so far, Apple’s newest devices have only Face ID and standard security features. The ability to include an in-display fingerprint sensor would make users’ interaction with the devices much more reliable and secure, so next year we may see a new iPhone with an “In Display” fingerprint reader.
