Google Maps Update To Add Speed Limit and Speed Camera Features

In 2013, Google bought Waze for $1.1 billion. While it was obvious that Google would borrow some features from Waze and implement them into its Google Maps app, it took almost six years for the giant Internet company to take the speed limit and speed camera features from Waze and add them to its navigation application via a Google Maps update.

Google Maps is the most popular navigation app in the world, and it is available on Android, iOS, and Windows and Mac via its web-based version. Now, Google decided to add speed limit feature in Google Maps, but only across the US, UK, and Denmark. As for the other function, the speed cameras functionality, Google Maps will show it just across Australia, the US, UK, Russia, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, India, and Indonesia.

In the selected countries, Google Maps will reveal the speed limit on roads, while across the US, UK, and Denmark the #1 navigation app in the world would also display where the speed cameras are located.

Google Maps Update To Add Speed Limit and Speed Camera Features

The new speed limit and speed camera features rolled out in their testing phase in July 2018 in San Francisco, Android Police being the first one to notice them. Also, back then, the functions were available in Brazil, in Rio De Janeiro. Last Thursday, the features rolled out widely via a Google Map update, but only across the United States, apparently.

Google confirmed that the speed camera features would launch across Australia, the UK, Russia, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, India, and Indonesia in the upcoming days. On the other hand, the speed limit function would also come out, but only in the US, UK, and Denmark.

At the moment, we don’t know if Google plans to add these two features in Google Maps across other countries around the world.

Soon, you’ll be able to check in to your flight (starting first with domestic flights with United Airlines), save and retrieve your boarding pass, all with the Google Assistant on Android or iOS,” Google added.

Google Maps Update Brings A New And Optimized Version Of The Google Assistant

Google Maps has become one of the favorite navigation apps, helping users get where they need as fast as possible. And now, Google Assistant joined the party in the form of the new and optimized Google Maps Assistant that wants to be your best ally on the road.

Since the launch of Google Maps in 2005, the platform has grown over the years to encompass satellite imagery, millions of points of interest, street view, step-by-step navigation, traffic conditions, public transport, and a host of useful features to users around the world. Google Maps has more than a billion active users today, making it the world’s most popular navigation app.

And now, the company is not only updating the application’s design but also its features to further enhance the Artificial Intelligence navigation experience. As part of the new features, some Google Maps users have already noticed one of the new features that Google is testing – a special Google Maps Assistant which seems to be optimized and specifically designed to be the best navigation companion.

Google Maps Update Brings A New And Optimized Version Of The Google Assistant

This news should not come as a surprise, as during the Google I/O event, the company revealed that the Google Assistant would soon come to Google Maps. Now, that’s a reality, at least for some of the users of the most popular navigation app. However, that Google Maps Assistant is not the full Google Assistant experience you’re used to when you use it on your smartphone, as it is a version optimized for navigation.

To see if you can already use the Google Maps Assistant, you can try to activate it by saying “Hey, Google” while using Google Maps or by pressing the colored microphone icon in the application. Once activated, the commands you give will be executed in the background, meaning that the navigation information will not disappear from the screen while the Assistant performs the tasks.

You can use Google Assistant to make calls, send text messages, play music, and access some other useful features while driving, all without leaving the Google Maps application.

Using Google Maps Everyday may have a Negative Impact

Any smartphone owner used Google Maps or a similar app at least once in their life.

After all, the process is quite simple. Enter the name of the place and a handy map will come up, showing you the right direction every time. Most will argue that they will take you to that cool but remote restaurant in a matter of minutes and many believe that what we get is the best and fastest route.

While minor inconveniences like battery drain may happen at some point, a new study points out that extensive use of GPS apps can significantly diminish your wayfinding skills.

From a practical point of view, even if you are able to reach your destination in time you won’t remember the path. When you will have to go to the same location next time you will also need to use the app again since you will not be able to find the way on your own.

Use of landmarks

In the past people used landmarks in order to find their way from one place to another. A route consisted out of several landmarks that come in succession and people traveled from one landmark to another while also enjoying the unique sights it had to offer.

People that rely on the app are unlikely to look at their surroundings. Even if they were to start from the same location, they will struggle while traveling since the environment will seem unfamiliar.

Even if the use of navigation apps is quite popular in our days this is not necessarily a bad thing. Yes, people may not go from one place to another like they used to in the old days but they will arrive faster at their destination.

The ease of using these apps also encourages people to be more adventurous since the risk of getting lost has been minimized.

Do keep in mind that sometimes the road towards your destination can be beautiful too.

Google Maps Would Add a Chat Function To Connect Customers With Businesses

Google has announced a new chat feature for Google Maps that will connect businesses with their customers. Soon you will be able to send messages to your favorite businesses from within Google Maps. Google Maps Chat, therefore, would allow users to send messages to your preferred companies from within the application.

The popular application for maps and GPS navigation, Google Maps, has not stopped evolving. And today the app has so many functions that one can only wonder how far Google can go with that. Some of the new features, however, are very useful, including the ability to organize trips with your friends directly on Maps.

However, now Google Maps Chat might sound weird for some, but it’s a method to keep customers in touch with their favorite businesses. By that, Google Maps now integrates a chat application, accessible via the so-called “hamburger menu” in the top corner of the main app’s screen. Within the new category there, you can view chat history and other related features.

Google Maps Chat: Google Still Struggling To Come Up With A Reliable Instant Messaging App

Google has always tried to release a reliable instant messaging or chat app. Today, only Google Duo remains on the market, enjoying a slight success, while Google Allo has been discontinued in favor of Chat, which should arrive soon as an addition to the Android Messages application.

However, at this time, we have seen that Google has continued to invest in messaging sections within apps such as YouTube or, more recently, Google Maps.

On YouTube, a native chat was set up that allowed you to share videos and comment on them with your Google contacts. And now, Google Maps will soon get a similar, but different, feature. Google Maps chat allows customers to connect with businesses directly from the app to solve issues or make reservations.
