Free NES Games on Nintendo Switch Online (January 2019 Update)

When Nintendo rolled out its Nintendo Switch Online, the company also released a series of classic NES games for all the subscribers. Now, here are the free NES games added on Nintendo Switch Online in January 2019. The last time Nintendo added classic NES games to the platform it was before the end of 2018 when the company launched nine games on Nintendo Switch Online.

However, the Japanese entertainment company did not reveal anything about its plans on the release of additional free NES games on Nintendo Switch Online.

A couple of days ago, luckily, Nintendo released a video showing the free NES games on Nintendo Switch Online of January 2019. According to the video, the January 2019 free NES games would be Zelda II – The Adventure of Link and Blaster Master. The games would be available for free for every subscriber of the Nintendo Switch Online platform.

Free NES Games on Nintendo Switch Online (January 2019 Update)

  • Zelda II – The Adventure of Link – “Link returns to Hyrule to search for the Triforce and to awaken Zelda from an endless sleep. Embark on a quest to find the Triforce of Courage and save Hyrule from ruin. Learn magic spells, talk to people in towns to get clues, collect items to increase your power and explore six palaces where the underlings of the evil Ganon await you,” the official game description released by Nintendo reads.
  • Blaster Master – “You have fallen down a hidden manhole into a world of creatures so terrifying they would scare the rats away. You can panic and perish, or blast your way through an endless maze of tunnels, searching for the secret passage to your escape. And that is the easy part, because the Master of the caverns lay waiting with prehistoric creatures so powerful, so gigantic, they literally fill your screen. So load your arsenal and get ready,” the description reads.

Both Zelda II – The Adventure of Link and Blaster Master games are already available on Nintendo Switch Online as the free NES games of January 2019.

Nintendo Switch Online Might Boast Content Beyond Classic NES Games

One of the main attractions through which Nintendo attempted to draw public attention to its Nintendo Switch Online service was the addition of a catalog of classic NES games. In this database, the Japanese brand brings out the jewels of the past as in the recent case of Gradius, and the truth is that the company desires to explore as much of the classic NES games as possible. However, recent statements by Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aime have opened the door for titles from other Nintendo platforms to be made available on Nintendo Switch Online.

“We’ll see what happens next, but as you pointed out, we don’t even have the entire NES game catalog at this point. This content has yet to be optimized for use on Nintendo Switch. That’s something we’re working on very hard. Like you, I also hope to be able to play Metroid through the Nintendo Switch Online service, and we will continue to make content available in the same way,” said Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aime for Kotaku.

Nintendo Switch Online Might Boast Content Beyond Classic NES Games

“So it seems that we can draw two conclusions: first, that Nintendo’s primary goal is to make the most of NES, and second, that once this is achieved, it certainly doesn’t seem to look bad to take advantage of work done on other of its great platforms of the past,” Fils-Aime added.

We should also remember that one of the saddest news of the week came from the same Fils-Aime who announced Nintendo’s refusal to work on a mini version of Nintendo 64, as had been done with the NES or SNES consoles. In this regard, we could not rule out that it was the same software for that platform that could also leap Nintendo Switch Online, going through SNES before that, of course.

If the Japanese brand is so predisposed to enhance classic games content of their older consoles, which is something they have frequently demonstrated, it would undoubtedly be a more exciting alternative not having interest in following a route similar to that of the before-mentioned NES and SNES.

Nintendo Switch Online To Get Three New Classic NES Games Soon

Nintendo Switch Online is already live and, although this means a restriction of the multiplayer that until now had been free on Nintendo Switch, the reality is that we are also facing a service with exciting advantages to reach the users, such as the ability to save our data in the cloud. Another one of the Nintendo Switch Online features is the access to a virtual library full of games of the classic NES video games, which also expand over time. So, finally, we know the first three classic NES game that will soon roll out on Nintendo Switch Online.

Nintendo Switch Online is up and running

Announced for a long time now, finally, Nintendo Switch Online reached Nintendo fans. The platform is allowing gamers to connect to a cloud where they can save their in-game save files, among others. Also, Nintendo Switch Online grant subscribers access to a classic NES games catalog.

“The NES fun doesn’t have to stop! More NES games are coming to Nintendo Switch. NES Open Tournament Golf, Solomon’s Key, and Super Dodge Ball will be available with a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Subscribe now and start playing on 10/10,” announced Nintendo America on Twitter.

Three classic NES games to reach Nintendo Switch Online soon

As we can see above, the novelties that will land in the classic NES games catalog on Nintendo Switch are none other than NES Open Tournament Golf, Solomon’s Key, and Super Dodge Ball.

While NES Open Tournament Golf and Super Dodge Ball are two game titles that launched on NES in 1991, Solomon’s Key is a classic puzzle game which was initially developed in 1986 for recreational purposes. However, a port for NES and Commodore 64 was released in 1987 and boosted the game’s popularity.

Ultimately, you should keep in mind that the classic NES games catalog on Nintendo Switch Online will be expanded by Nintendo on a regular basis, as the company announced earlier this year.

Nintendo Switch Online Will Launch Next Week Along With A Bonus of Classic NES Games For Subscribers

Nintendo Switch Online, the paid service on which the company has been working since before the console even reached the stores, is now around the corner as it will roll out next week. According to Nintendo America, the new Nintendo Switch Online service will launch on September 18th. The new service’s launch is expected to be announced today at a new Nintendo Direct event.

According to the information disclosed by the company, the Nintendo Switch Online would come out with a free trial period of seven days, after which it will be necessary to pay for a subscription plan to keep on using the service.

Nintendo Switch Online would offer three subscription plans as follows:

  • 1 month – $3.99;
  • 3 months – $7.99;
  • 1 year – $19.99;

Besides, there will also be a family subscription plan with a limit of 8 different Nintendo accounts and a price of $34.99 per year.

Nintendo Switch Online will come out next week with cloud backup and a welcome pack of classic NES games

“The vast majority of Nintendo Switch games will support cloud backup. However, in certain games, this function would allow, for example, to recover objects that had been exchanged with other players, or to recover an online classification that had been lost. To ensure fair play, cloud backup should not be activated in such games. To ensure that cloud backups cannot be used to unfairly affect online multiplayer classifications, the feature will not be enabled in Splatoon 2,” explained Nintendo.

Besides Splatoon 2, however, titles like Dark Souls Remastered, Dead Cells, FIFA 19 or NBA 2K19, wouldn’t support cloud backup, either.

Nintendo is also preparing a welcome pack of classic NES games, the main novelty of which is that they will have online features. These include Soccer, Tennis, Donkey Kong, Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber, Dr. Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros.

However, Nintendo announced its intentions to release new titles occasionally, as these games will be available free of charge but only for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.
