Apple Wants To “Steal” Engineers From Qualcomm To Design Its Own 5G Modem For iPhone

Apple goes for everything and now goes for Qualcomm’s employees. In the last few months, the relationship between Qualcomm and Apple has cooled down, although the former company supplies the latter with some components since they are one of the leading mobile chipset manufacturers in the market. Apple considers that Qualcomm has a monopoly and want to put an end to it by building a factory right next to Qualcomm and “stealing” its engineers to design components for them, including a 5G modem for iPhone.

The conflict between Apple and Qualcomm goes back to early 2017 when Apple accused Qualcomm of a dominant market position. Qualcomm replied by ending its distribution for iPhone factories in China and the US. A few months later, Qualcomm said it was only business, but the war was far from over.

Apple Aims To Steal Qualcomm Engineers To Design Its 5G Model for iPhone

As we read in Bloomberg, Apple would have set up a team in San Diego, the home of Qualcomm, to develop chips focused on artificial intelligence and a next 5G modem for iPhone.

Qualcomm has been Apple’s main modem provider for more than five years, and with this move, they would lose a big customer. We’ll see how events unfold, but Apple’s movement looks like a definitive end of a long-term partnership between the two companies. In addition to that, this move reveals that Apple aims to finally design and manufacture all of its internal components for its devices.

In reality, Apple already does that with its mobile chipsets, both CPUs and GPUs, as well as with its MicroLED displays that are supposed to be under development, as we speak. Apple wants to “steal” engineers from Qualcomm to design its 5G modem for iPhone, putting an end to a long-term partnership with Qualcomm, still one of the most significant chipset producers in the world.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 To Boast Faster Cores And Triple-Camera Support

Recently, Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 has been officially announced as a mid-range smartphone SoC, but which boasts some high-end features of top-end chipsets. Noteworthy is that its new architecture, Kryo 460, is developed around the ARM Cortex-A76 cores, mainly designed for flagship smartphones but which haven’t yet make it to Qualcomm CPUs. Also, Huawei Kirin 980 uses ARM Cortex-A76.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 will come out with 8 cores

The upcoming Snapdragon 675 will boast two cores at 2.00 GHz that focus on performance and six cores at 1.78 GHz that center on power efficiency. In comparison, the current Snapdragon 845 (the most potent Qualcomm chipset on the market, at the moment) employs four 2.8GHz performance cores built around ARM Cortex-A75.

According to this information, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 would be slower than the Snapdragon 845, the current Qualcomm flagship SoC. Besides, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 is built on 10-nm technology, while the Snapdragon 675 is an 11-nm chipset.

It’s not a big surprise that Qualcomm decided to build a new mid-range SoC, especially since the future Snapdragon 675 would outperform the current mid-tier chipset, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 would boast triple-camera support

What’s particularly cool with the upcoming Snapdragon 675 is that it would possess triple-camera support, a feature that is more and more common on mid-range smartphones, besides high-end devices.

More specifically, Qualcomm is building its new Snapdragon 675 with support for those devices with three cameras, and will also bring some enhancements for gaming that would help users run specific games more smoothly. That’s pretty similar to Huawei’s GPU Turbo Optimization. Furthermore, Snapdragon 675 will come with Quick Charge 4+ support and an improved artificial intelligence engine.

According to Qualcomm, by the end of Q1 2019, the majority of mid- and high-range devices would come out with triple-camera systems on their back. That’s why the new Snapdragon 675 would come out on the market during the first quarter of 2019.

Qualcomm Decides Which One Works Better, Snapdragon or Intel

Compared to the iPhone X, Galaxy S9 has a faster speed of downloading, and Samsung does not ditch a possibility to mock Apple in its new short ad. Samsung used the information Ookla provided regarding its “Speedtest Intelligence” report. This report also made a battle between Snapdragon 845’s X20 LTE modem and Qualcomm.

However, the opinions are because there is a continuous debate on whether Ookla’s Speedtest is accurate enough. The con people would say that their method is not even scientific because it is user-initiated. Contrary to that, the pro people suggest that the public would rather know how the phone would function when they have it in their hands and not under controlled conditions.

The latency and download and upload speeds of the Android phones running on the Snapdragon 845 are significantly outperforming other phones, according to Ookla’s report. The modems Intel pushes to mobile devices are Intel XMM7360 and XMM7840, and Qualcomm is focused on them. However, the only phones which use these modems are Apple’s iPhones.

If you have read before about the rivalry between Apple and Qualcomm you might already know what it is all about. US International Trade Commission was about to be convinced to block iPhones with Intel modems by Qualcomm’s hand due to potential patent infringement. As that did not work out, now they are trying to convince you that the iPhones with Intel LTE do not let you benefit from more innovative technology unless you get a Qualcomm phone. Unsurprisingly, T-Mobile and AT&T are also singled by Qualcomm.

The effect of this move might consist of Apple changing its tactic. Apple does not want to do anything anymore with Qualcomm and it sues it as their focus is base on the LTE modems.
