WhatsApp Spyware Hack: What to do if you think your phone was affected?

WhatsApp said recently that a major security breach allowed hackers to install spyware on some users’ phone by calling them through the application voice call. It could be installed whether or not the victim answered the call and once is installed the record of the call is removed from the phone. The spyware has the ability to activate a phone’s camera and microphone.

WhatsApp platform is used by 1.5 billion people and all brands of phones with both WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business were affected. However, the number of infected phones is not yet known.

It was confirmed that UK-based human rights and an Amnesty researcher have been targeted. It is unlikely that your phone has been infected if you did not receive a voice call from an unknown number on WhatsApp, however, if you should be very cautious if you are working for a law firm or a sensitive industry.

In order to be on the safe side, it is highly recommended to update your WhatsApp to the latest version. Although phones get updates automatically, it is advised to check for them manually in your Apple or Google Play store, Microsoft or Galaxy app store. Another way is to simply uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.

Updating phone’s operating system is as critical to protecting yourself as having your lasts applications version. It is not recommended to use a phone that is not supported by software updates. Google’s Pixel smartphones receive at least three years of monthly security and Android version updates while iPhones usually get at least five years of software support. All Android devices updates are dependent on the manufacturer brand.

Why are software updates important?

Because hackers’ techniques and methods are becoming more and more sophisticated and vulnerabilities are found all the time. While software makers are able to fix these security holes the user cannot get the support unless is updating the phone with the latest update.

GBWhatsApp and YoWhatsApp Accounts, Temporarily Banned by WhatsApp

f you are using modded Whatsapp apps like GBWhatsapp, in a surprising turn of events, WhatsApp will ban you. WhatsApp owns the title for the most used messaging app across platforms. As it comes with a lot of great features user are taking advantages of, but what it offers might not be enough for some of them. The users that want more from the app turned to WhatsApp Plus, OGWhatsApp, or GBWhatsApp for those features missing from the official application. Privacy and customization are some aspects that are better developed in the modded apps.

Millions of users benefit from these modded apps daily as they have been out there for years now. However, as WhatsApp begins taking action against the users that are on those apps as well, it looks like things are coming to a bitter end. It has been a few days since reports of GBWhatsApp being temporarily banned from using Whatsapp started appearing on Twitter.

GBWhatsApp and YoWhatsApp Accounts, Temporarily Banned by WhatsApp

WhatsApp decided to temporary ban these users because they violate the app’s terms of service. Some users were only banned for an hour while others got a 9-hour-long ban. It is evident that the terms of service the official app has, are violated by the modded ones because the additional features they offer are complete against WhatsApp’s policies.

Regarding this issue, WhatsApp decided not to give any statements, so whether they will continue banning users that are on the modded version of the app or they will stop doing so is still unknown. There are millions of users on these mod apps, and they will surely find a way to avoid getting banned as it is important for them to keep using the features the modded versions of WhatsApp are offering them.

WhatsApp Messenger 2.19.120 Beta Now Available

WhatsApp Beta program has been quite active in these past days, which can only mean great news for the new stable WhatsApp build. The Facebook Developer Conference begins tomorrow, April 30, and lasts until May 1, which could be one of the reasons we keep on seeing more improvements and features added to the popular messaging app. At the event also known as F8, the developers will show their plans for WhatsApp, just like they did last year when they presented their work which focused on group calls and stickers.

WhatsApp 2.19.120 Beta – Getting Ready for F8?

The 2.19.120 beta version was just aired today, and it’s about 33.62 MB big. However, the guys at WABetaInfo haven’t written anything about it yet, except for informing the beta users on Twitter to always back up the chat history before updating the app:

When there is a new WhatsApp update for iOS or Android, you should always back up your chat history before updating WhatsApp. An update might contain critical bugs that force you to uninstall WhatsApp: if you backed up the chat history, you’ve no need to worry.

In a fresh update, they also explained that there is no “nudge” feature in this update:

As for the Facebook Conference, they mentioned that among other news from the developers, we will see the features that are still not yet (or not fully added) in the beta version:

What we expect from the Facebook conference this year? Calls from WhatsApp Web, Animated Stickers, Dark Mode, Group Privacy Settings and good news about Windows Phone support and Payments!

However, the developers could also talk about the new UI (also dubbed “Vacation Mode”), and many other new features that haven’t been added yet.

Check back here for more news about WhatsApp, which should be available as soon as F8 starts unveiling more about the plans devs have for this app!

WhatsApp Messenger 2.19.109 Beta Released Today, New Features Coming Soon

The latest WhatsApp beta version has just been released today, reaching v. 2.19.109. WhatsApp is working on introducing an improvement to the animated stickers.

As we noticed on WABetaInfo, this feature is still being worked on:

  • The Animated Stickers feature is not available yet.
  • WhatsApp is working on the feature in recent Android, iOS and Web updates, adding a lot of improvements and bug fixes. For this reason it’s ok if you have updated your WhatsApp version and you don’t see the feature. It will be available in future for everyone.

We will see the animated stickers in the stickers pack. Users will be able to see the full animation of the sticker in the preview (unlike GIFs which we only see for a few seconds).

WhatsApp for iOS is also getting support for Animated Stickers. Users of WhatsApp for Web will get to see Animated Stickers, too.

As for when the feature will be enabled in the stable WhatsApp version, there is no official announcement. In the Beta version, it works well, and it will support third-party stickers as well.

If you’re in the beta program, you can download WhatsApp 2.19.109 beta  (- APK Mirror link to WhatsApp APK file) and enjoy other bug fixes and improvements, as well as testing the stickers.

Screenshots in Chat Getting Changed

Among the many other new features planned for the stable WhatsApp version of this app, the team at WABetaInfo also spotted a new strange change that would be introduced in the future. In WhatsApp beta for Android 2.19.106 update, they saw a new feature that will make it more difficult for users to take screenshots of the chat.

So the option will not make it impossible to take screenshots of the chat, but all users enabling authentication with fingerprint will not be able to take screenshots anymore.
