Microsoft had a big time in 2018 because, besides the fact that it gained recognition as the most valuable company in the world, they also offered a free upgrade to Windows 10 for a period of time, and now the Windows 10 is the most popular operating system, surpassing Windows 7 with a 39.22 percent yearly market share.

After the free boost program was launched, Microsoft declared that the program was going to be available until July 29, 2016, but later next year, in November 2017, the tech giant announced that the offer was lengthened until December that year. However, beginning with last year, you can still use the upgrade for free even though Microsoft clearly stated that the expiration date is final this time. January 6, 2018, was the last day of the assistive technology being free but the page is still functional until today!

You can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free

Users who lost the chance to upgrade the Windows 10 for free, will never want to pay $199 to get the latest variant of the Windows. However, upon checking, it has been discovered that the assistive technologies upgrade page is still available. You won’t have the tool that upgrades your operating system to Windows 10 for free because it has already been deleted, but some of the users declared they were still able to install their OS for free, with just a few alternative solutions. All that you need would be a licensed version of an older Windows OS installed on your system.

Even if Windows 10 is the most popular operating system in the world, it still has serious competition in the Mac OS, and if Microsoft can get more users to stay with their operating system or shift to it, the company will most certainly benefit. The free upgrade was commenced by the company to gain as many users as possible, and it was a success as more than 1.96 billion users have Windows 10 on their computers.

In conclusion, if the free upgrade is still available, only Microsoft can answer that question. However, with just a few adjustments, one can upgrade to Windows 10 by utilizing Windows 7 or 8. If you want the Windows 10 but you don’t want to pay for it, you can try a few workarounds to see if it will work for you or not.

Windows 10 May Upgrade Can’t Be Done with External USB Plugged into the Computer

Testers have tried to upgrade to the latest version of Windows 10, but they are facing some problems when doing this operation. The computers are being blocked from executing the command if they have an external USB or an SD card plugged into their PCs. The Windows 10 May 2019 is still in final testing and will be released in May.

Why Is the Upgrade Being Blocked?

The problem seems to be when all drivers have inappropriately reassigned different letters when external devices are connected to the computer. As you have observed by now on your Windows, the system is giving letters to all the intern or external drivers: hard drive, SSD, USB or SD cards. When the process of upgrading is taking place, those letters can be changed, but that’s the moment when the problem appears.

Nevertheless, to say, the real problem appears when the internal hard drive is affected. The external ones can be remove easily. If this happens with your internal hard drive, if the update is reassigned you a different letter, the damage caused can be significant. Imagine the worst scenario of your computer looking for files on a specific drive, but the files are no longer there because of the modified letter. Because of that, Microsoft has blocked all the upgrades to the new version, especially for the computers with USB devices attached. If you still want to upgrade your OS with the latest version, remove all your external devices and cards, and restart your PC. After that, the Windows 10 May 2019 should become available.

Finally, Microsoft has declared that these issues will be resolved with a future servicing update for Windows 10, and the testers have the issue fixed in build 18877. We are hoping that Windows wouldn’t make the same mistake this time like the one made with October 2018 Update.

KB4487011 offers Four major fixes and improvements are offered by KB4487011, and here they are:

Some apps which are using Microsoft Jet database as well as the Microsoft Access 95 file format were randomly stopping thanks to the Microsoft Access bug. However, this is fixed.

Problems related to loading images having a backlash when it comes to their relative source path were fixed by this update.
