iOS 12.1 Beta 5 Is Download Available With Group FaceTime Video Calls

Back on October 22, Apple released iOS 12.1 beta 5 for developers. The public received the beta a few hours later. Just a week before that, they made the fourth beta available for both developers and public testers.

iOS 12.1 update is expected to bring some noticeable changes. However, beta 5 did not come with anything major. If you plan to install it you should expect some minor security improvements as well as bug fixes.

How to get the update as a developer?

As a developer, you will be the first one to get the new updates. Nonetheless, you can only receive them if you are registered as a developer and you have a configuration profile that is valid.

You can also enable “Automatic Updates” so that all updates will be installed automatically. If you want to do it yourself, you will have to go to the Settings app, head over to General and then choose Software Update. Tap Download and Install and follow the instructions that show up on screen.

The fifth iOS 12.1 beta is probably the last one, which means that it is very likely to get the final version this week. Public Beta 5 did not come with any release notes, which means that we do not have that many details.

One important feature that we will get with iOS 12.1 is the launch of Group FaceTime video calls. Initially, we were supposed to receive this with iOS 12, but Apple decided that it will push it back. Nonetheless, it appears that numerous users won’t get it. According to the user guide for iOS 12.1 released by Apple, this feature won’t be available for iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air, iPad Mini 2, iPad Mini 3, iPad Mini 4 and 6th generation iPod Touch.

The first iOS 12.1 Beta version launched yesterday and seems like it’s boasting Face ID support in landscape mode, most likely, dedicated to iPad Pro models. Thus, there are virtually no chances to see this one on iPhone X or the new iPhone XS and XR as Apple would have to realign front-facing sensors.

This new mode for Face ID is undoubtedly made for iPad Pro models which are almost most of the time used in landscape mode and switching to portrait view to unlock the device with Face ID might it is inconvenient for many users.

New iPad Pro models are in the works right now, and they would boast Face ID and thinner edges, but as small as those on iPhone XS, for example, but pretty close. Even though Apple has not announced its new tablets on the event held on September 12th, the new iPad Pro models might get their official presentation in October, some rumors say.

The upcoming iPad Pro models, rumored to hit shelves by the end of the year, would be just two updated versions of the last 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch models. However, they might boast Face ID, while some other rumors say Apple decided to switch from Lightning charging to USB-C.

While the new iOS 12.1 Beta version, released yesterday, September 18th, is not bringing in many new features and improvements, it does come out with Face ID support in landscape mode and group FaceTime, previously eliminated in the iOS 12 release.

iOS 12.1 Beta boasted a lower score than iOS 12 in several benchmark tests, but that’s not something we should worry about since it’s only a beta version and the focus is not on the performance but the new features.

Apparently, the new iOS 12.1 Beta support for Face ID in landscape mode is dedicated to the upcoming iPad Pro models and not to iPhone devices.
