Microsoft To Combine Xbox Live Gold With Xbox Game Pass [which just got Minecraft]

We just talked about the incredible sale of Minecraft in the past 10 years since it launched on PC, and it’s still rising. The sales will continue to get higher not just on PC, but also on more platforms if Microsoft will combine the two subscriptions into a single one.

As reported by Twitter user @h0x0d, we could see a new service from Microsoft called Xbox Game Pass Ultimate:

https://twitter.com/h0x0d/status/1114159135048646657?s=20

This person claims that the service will only be $14.99 per month, which is quite the bargain, considering Xbox owners will save almost $5 per month if Microsoft really wants to combine the services. As The Verge pointed out, Microsoft will certainly reveal something about this in the next weeks when they will unveil the disc-less Xbox One S All-Digital edition.

Why should we trust what @h0x0d tweeted?

It’s simple: it makes perfect sense, and it’s a good strategy, which has been used in the past by Microsoft. Remember the Xbox All Access subscription which bundled together with a leased Xbox One X, Xbox Live Gold, and Xbox Game Pass for $34.99/month? Probably that one-time offer was testing the reaction of users and how the bundling service was received by players.

Considering all the aggressive marketing around the Xbox Game Pass and the fact that the disc-less Xbox One is counting on the digital games offered through the Microsoft services, a bundle named Xbox Game Pass Ultimate isn’t far-fetched.

The games added to the Xbox Game Pass since it launched are Sea of Thieves and Crackdown 3, and Minecraft was recently added. Microsoft is also working on the xCloud streaming service to let players stream games on different platforms (PCs, smartphones/tablets, consoles).

Minecraft Sold 30 Million Copies on PC 10 Years After Its Launch

No matter the platform, Minecraft and its editions sold over 150 million copies. The official tracker has shown that PC sales are over 30 million and still rising. It’s been ten years since the initial release to the public, and Minecraft does not let us down for one second.

In 2014, the console sales of this game exceeded the Mac and PC figures, and one year later, the Pocket Edition and the iOS editions have sold 30 million units.

Minecraft is still one of the most popular games out there

In October 2018, Helen Chiang, who’s the head of Minecraft had told some sources that the game as achieved over 90 million monthly active users, and, across all platforms, it has sold over 150 million units. It sure is not much of a surprise, but if you think about other gaming properties, it’s a fantastic achievement. Truth be told, the PC sales for Minecraft only have exceeded some lifetime sales for other franchises, that come with many sequels and many other installments.

It’s safe to say that Minecraft is the best-selling game that was ever made. We are to take a look at its beginning, it started small, and it’s possible that no game will ever reach these much sales again.

Fortnite Battle Royale is the most popular game released since Minecraft rolled out

Let’s take Fortnite as an example. This game is probably the biggest video game released since Minecraft, but it still has Epic behind it, and it clearly had a big company behind the scenes to work on it. Still, the sales are high for Minecraft, who had nothing at the beginning. We simply cannot deny its popularity.

Last week, the Minecraft update got rid of all the references to the Minecraft’s creator Markus Persson, from the splash screens, probably because of his Twitter.

Minecraft Shader Pack Brings Ray Tracing Effects

Graphics are not the most critical element when it comes to some games, and Minecraft proved that from a lot of points of view. The blocky visuals of the sandbox title did not stop this game from turning into one of the most popular titles of all time, but you can still switch to modders if you who want to give its looks an overhaul. A lot of attention has been drawn recently by one particular shader pack thank to its addition of what resembles ray tracing effects.

Even though this is not the type of ray tracing you have been used to from Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Battlefield V, or Metro Exodus, the rendering method used, the ‘path tracing,’ in the latest build of Sonic Ether’s Unbelievable Shaders (SEUS) does not look worse. A couple of short clips have been posted by the artist @notglacier on Twitter, and there you can see how the game is changed because of the shader. Some effects can also be observed associated with ray tracing, including light beams and their reflections on different surfaces.

Minecraft with ray tracing effects needs more performant computers than vanilla Minecraft version

No matter how bad of a potato your PC is, Vanilla Minecraft might work on it, but a lot beefier will be needed if you want to run this shader pack at an acceptable speed. GTX 1070 Ti and an i9-9900k CPU has been used by Notglacier, and that combo was enough for only 25 – 40 fps.

If you would like to give a substantial visual overhaul to your favorite game, go to Sonic Ether’s Patreon page and download the shader pack from there as it is available to backers. You also get access to his Discord server and experimental builds if you pledge monthly payments and that is great.
