PlayStation 5 Leaks: Reportedly, Sony Patented The Future PS5 Controller

The race to present PS5 and Xbox Scarlet is underway. Every time we receive new rumors and announcements of what will offer PlayStation 5 and the next console from Microsoft. Now, according to some new PlayStation 5 leaks, Sony patented the PS5 controller which would boast a touchscreen.

Sony Is Taking Big Steps Towards The Future PlayStation 5 Console

In other news, Sony also announced recently that it had patented the backward compatibility for the upcoming console with some cool improvements, including reproducing PS4, PS3, PlayStation 2 and PSX games with new textures, 4K resolution, improved framerate, and overall performance, without touching the code.

Also, Sony reportedly patented the PS Move PS5 for use with PSVR virtual reality devices. Now, however, it’s the turn of a new patent registered by Sony Computer Entertainment’s headquarters in America to come out to light. The new PS5 controllers will have a design very similar to the current Dual Shock 4, according to the patent documents.

Sony Reportedly Patented the PS5 Controller To Be Used With The Future PlayStation 5

The next PS5 controller is designed for interacting wirelessly with the console and includes a housing defined by the main body and two extensions to hold with both hands, as well as a touchscreen at the top and two sets of buttons, respectively on both sides of the touchscreen.

As we can see, the PS5 controller would be very similar to that of the current console, although no mention is made of analog levers or the presence of leds. It is also not mentioned in any section if the future controller would include vibration or motion sensors, but the patent of the PS5 controller does not exclude other technologies that can be added, including some type of NFC reader.

PlayStation Plus Prices Go Up, As The State of Chicago Adopted a New ‘Entertainment Tax’

The United States is a country in which each state has its own tax law, so it is normal to see that there are taxes in one state that are not adopted in another. The same thing will happen soon in Chicago, a state that has passed an ”entertainment tax”, a tax that taxes online entertainment services, such as Netflix, and that will raise the price of PlayStation Plus, among other Sony services, too.

Some time ago, the city of Chicago passed a law that boosted the tax on streaming content services. Xbox, Netflix, and Spotify, among others. These are now services for which users in that state must pay 9% more than those in other states of the country, and now Sony will see how this tax will damage several of its divisions. And yes, PlayStation Plus games will now cost a little more.

PlayStation Plus Prices Go Up, As The State of Chicago Adopted a New ‘Entertainment Tax’

Starting on November 14th, the price of PlayStation Plus will rise 9% in Chicago, but the tax will also affect other services such as PlayStation Now, PlayStation Vue, PlayStation Music, PlayStation Video on Demand and PlayStation Video Live Events. All these services operate in the cloud and precisely this ”cloud tax” could be implemented in other cities, such as New York.

Mayor Ralph Emanuel’s explanation for this ”entertainment tax”, as it is known locally, is that it helps pay pensions, no more, no less. Of course, companies don’t stand idly by, since it’s the users who have to pay that extra 9%, and companies can witness many unsubscriptions due to the tax.

Companies like Apple and Netflix are, at the moment, trying to act to eliminate this tax, which does not tax the physical content, for example, or the sales of digital games, but in the meantime, it will be time to go through the checkout process, if you live in Chicago, of course. Let’s hope a ”cloud tax” doesn’t reach other regions as well.

Changing PSN Name Come With Some Significant Risks

A couple of weeks ago, Sony confirmed that it now allows users to change their usernames on PlayStation Network. This possibility has been one of the most sought-after features since the PS3 era. Yes, it’s something that has thrilled the brand’s consumers, but the change brings with it a number of significant risks that you need to take into account. So, think twice before making the change.

The 6.10 firmware documentation includes some important warnings about the new name change feature in PlayStation Network. First of all, as we already knew from the announcement, not all PS3, PS Vita and PlayStation 4 games will be compatible with the function. That would cause some titles to present problems. The remaining risks are even more worrying.

The users could lose access to purchased additional content, the renowned DLC packs, including coins and other virtual items. Upon changing their usernames, gamers may also lose the progress of games, save files, scores, and trophies they won. Regarding games, they might also develop specific issues, both in online and offline modes.

Changing PSN Name Come With Some Significant Risks

Additionally, in some sections of the PlayStation Network, people will still see users’ old nicknames, but Sony doesn’t specify where this might happen. Finally, once you modify your PSN name, there will be no going back. In case of problems, returning to your past ID will not solve the situation.

We recommend you wait and see what the exact repercussions will be, especially in those games you enjoy every day.

The warnings have generated doubts, so, is it really worth the risk? Perhaps the best thing to do is to create a new account and avoid any issues. It will be at the beginning of 2019 when this new PSN name change feature would become available to the general public. The first change will be free, but subsequent PSN name modifications will cost $9.99. PlayStation Plus members will have a discount, having to pay only $4.99.

PlayStation 5: What We Should Expect From Sony’s Next-Gen Console

Although we have the confirmation that Sony is indeed working on a next-gen console, we don’t yet know if it would be named PlayStation 5, but everything we know so far leads to that nomination. However, be it called as it may, here’s what we should expect from the future PS5.

Sony confirmed it’s working on a next-generation console, but the Japanese company offered no details on what’s likely to be named or its features. However, some rumors, some coming even from internal sources, revealed a few possible features the upcoming PlayStation 5 (let’s call it this way) is most likely to boast.

PlayStation 5: What We Should Expect From Sony’s Next-Gen Console

Backwards Compatibility

According to a recent patent filed by Sony, the future PlayStation 5 would come out with “backwards compatibility” with all the other Sony consoles. That would mean that PlayStation 5 would run PS4, PS3, PS2, and PS1 games.

Significant PSN changes

On PlayStation 3, the PlayStation Network was not much of a thing for PS gamers. However, with the release of PS4, Sony revamped its PSN. With PS5, Sony would continue to improve its PlayStation Network with new features.

V-Sync Support

Also, per another patent that Sony filed, the upcoming PlayStation 5 will add V-Sync support, meaning that the games on Sony’s next-gen console will run with smoother graphics and less screen tearing. In other words, a 60-FPS game on a 60-Hz display would never exceed 60 FPS thanks to V-Sync.

Universal Cross-Platform Play

Sony has finally introduced crossplay but only in its testing phase and for just one game. It’s not yet known if the Japanese company would add this feature to more games. However, PlayStation 5 is expected to implement universal cross-platform play which would allow gamers on PS5 to connect and play with those on other platforms.

PlayStation 5 Release Date

Sony Entertainment has just confirmed the development of a next-gen console, so it’s not clear when the future PlayStation 5 would come out. According to some earlier rumors, however, we should expect the PS5 to come out somewhen between 2020 and 2021.
