Over 3 Billion People Downloaded VLC

VLC, the open source video player app was about to surpass the 3 billion downloads level on Friday. Of course, the Videolan team could not miss this occasion to celebrate the success of their product. In order to make it as visible as possible and get a little bit of help from their fans, they set up a special download counter at their CES booth in Las Vegas.

According to one of the lead developers of the app, Jean-Baptiste Kempf, and based on VLC’s estimations, this milestone should have been surpassed on Friday some time afternoon.

Kempf is obviously looking forward to improving VLC especially after seeing how wanted it is and one of those changes would be the introduction of Airplay. This implementation offers Android users the possibility of beaming videos to their Apple TVs from their mobile devices. If you are wondering when that would happen, Kempf said that in about a month Airplay should make its way to the main VLC app.

During the CES celebration, another feature was demonstrated, the enhanced support for VR. This offers the possibility of watching traditional 2D movies in a virtual theater environment while using headsets such as the HTC Vive.

According to Kempf, the Videolan team got most VR headsets to support natively, through the main VLC app, VR video all by reverse-engineering them. VLC would have gotten hundreds of megabytes of code added if they had relied on the SDKs of headset manufacturers. However, this is based on just around 1 megabyte of additional code.

Other implementations on VLC’s list is simplifying the switch from iTunes and building out a more complete media library for its app. However, Kempf said that building a comprehensive media center solution is not the goal here as they are not willing to compete with other more developed platforms.

iOS 12 Jailbreak – What Will Happen to the Reported Bug?

Last year the 360 Vulcan team was congratulated by TianfuCup (@Tianfucup) on Twitter after they won the highest reward of Tianfu Cup 2018 PWN contest. They got the win after they gained full access to iPhone X using a UaF bug in iOS kernel and a type confusion jit bug in Safari.

SorryMyBad (@SorryMyBad) of 360 Vulcan then replied that after the fix he would release more information and this is precisely what happened last week. Information was promised by the security researcher according to RedmondPie all after the reported bug will be patched by Apple.

The iOS 12.1.3 developer beta was released by Apple on Monday as you may already know and not too long after the iOS 12.1.3 public beta 3 followed. It is still unknown whether the SorryMyBad’s reported bug was patched or not, but there will not be long until someone figures it out.

Returning to the bug we heard about from SorryMyBad, it affects iOS 12.1.2 and below according to RedmondPie. Besides that we know for sure that is compatible with all pre-A12 device which means that if you are an iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max owner you can’t benefit from it. Another thing was confirmed by SorryMyBad, and that is that the kernel task port is provided.

GeoSn0w (@FCE365) asked whether or not the kernel task is reported and SorryMyBad offered the answer everybody was hoping for “Absolutely yes.”

GeoSn0w explains why this support is so important. One is allowed to perform arbitrary writes and reads to the kernel memory only with the help of tfp0 ( the kernel task port) that is also necessary to apply the required jailbreak patches. Besides that, users are also advised not to update.

IOS 11 Gets a New Update for a Cydia Eraser

Cydia’s creator, Jay Freeman, or as what most of us know him, saurik, replied to a post while confirming that he put an updated version of Cydia Esaer on his agenda. Unc0ver jailbreak users are already getting excited because of this news as it will make it quicker for them to revert to stock by removing the jailbreak.

How great is it to see that Freeman has finally decided to speak up his mind regarding his desire to update his tools and also what comes along with this, offering the best compatibility with @pwn20wnd’s unc0ver jailbreak.

This particular jailbreak solution makes saurik happy, and he is also satisfied with how it has been put together. With that being said, he does not mind throwing in some additional hours of work to update his packages and tools. It is not the first time we see happening with updates to Cydia Impactor.

Freeman, also nicknamed the “godfather of jailbreaking,” was put into a position in which he needed to answer what he is thinking about doing next. He mentioned that he is working on a Cydia Eraser update for iOS 11.
