Lately, OEMs bet on smartphones with increasingly larger screens and thinner bezels. Therefore, each year, we get dozens of bigger mobile phones. Accordingly, the compact smartphones became rarer. That’s why the majority of big names in the industry quit thinking about launching such phones. In this regard, reportedly, Sony would not release the so-called Xperia XZ4 Compact variant.
The idea that Sony might shut down the development of the compact version of its Xperia XZ4 came after Sony Mobile’s Vice President of Marketing, Mr. Don Mesa, reported that the company “stuck with Compact for a very long time, because of the ease of use. There’s always room for different sizes, but people want a lot more surface area for their content now.”
While Don Mesa’s statement is not directly saying that Xperia XZ4 Compact variant is not going to launch, but the VP suggests that larger smartphones attract more and more consumers, so there’s no reason for investing money and time in producing a so-called compact smartphone.
Reportedly, Sony Would Not Release Xperia XZ4 Compact Variant
However, the statement released by Don Mesa on DigitalTrends is open to interpretation. Since some Xperia XZ Compact renders leaked, some would think that this smartphone will indeed come out, eventually, and that Don Mesa referred to future devices. On the other hand, Steve H. McFly (@OnLeaks on Twitter), the author of the before-mentioned leaks of XZ Compact renders, also confirmed that the compact variant of Xperia XZ4 got shut down.
“Bad news for those which were excited regarding the upcoming #SONY #XPERIAZ4Compact… It seems like it has likely been axed,” reported Steve H. McFly on Twitter.
According to OnLeaks, his Xperia XZ4 Compact renders were not fake, so I guess that Sony decided to shut down the project in the last minute. Even though we hope that Sony would continue its work on compact smartphones, we don’t expect to see a Sony compact device with flagship technical specs anytime soon.
