Scaling up for the legions of player heroes who will be joining the fight is key to providing an excellent experience. Fortnite and YouTube Scares Netflix More Than The Upcoming Disney+

Netflix came out to reply to the many people thinking that the most popular streaming platform in the world would lose subscribers when Disney+ comes out. Netflix thinks Fortnite and YouTube are greater competitors than the upcoming Disney+, HBO, or Amazon, according to a recent shareholder letter the company released.

So, according to Netflix, the streaming platform’s representatives are more concerned with Fortnite and YouTube than with the forthcoming Disney+ streaming platform, HBO, or Amazon. According to the company, Netflix has already earned 10 percent of all US television screen time, while “Bird Box” totaled 80 million viewers in its first month. The streaming platform expects that “You” would sum up to 40 million viewers over the same period.

Thus, Netflix wants to ensure people that the emergence of new streaming platforms such as Disney+ will not make subscribers ditch Netflix. On the other hand, Netflix is more concerned with the growth of Fortnite and YouTube.

Fortnite and YouTube Scares Netflix More Than The Upcoming Disney+, HBO, or Amazon

“Our focus is not on Disney+, Amazon or others, but on how we can improve our experience for others. We compete with (and lose to) Fortnite more than HBO. When YouTube went down globally for a few minutes in October, our viewing and signups spiked for that time,” said Netflix in its shareholder letter.

“We compete so broadly with all of these providers, that any one provider entering only makes a difference on the margin,” said Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix.

While the YouTube presence on the list of Netflix’s competitors is not surprising, the thing that Netflix mentioned Fortnite might be confusing. In reality, it shouldn’t be so, as Netflix aims to compete with all kind of entertainment out there and go live on as many devices as they exist out there, including gaming consoles.

Fortnite Devs To Release A Set Of Tools That Simplifies Cross-Platform Multiplayer

In 2017, Epic Games switched on the cross-platform play in Fortnite, allowing gamers on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 to play the game together. Back then, Epic Games representatives explained that “the cross-platform support was as easy as flipping a switch.” Now, the Fortnite devs are about to release a set of tools that simplifies cross-platform multiplayer.

In early 2019, Epic Games would launch its cross-platform online services toolkit for free, allowing developers “run parties, matchmaking, voice chat, and more that work across PC, Mac, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android,” as VentureBeat reported.

“Successfully launching and operating a live, online game requires a suite of services that go far beyond the functionality of a traditional game engine. These services are expensive to build, test, and harden in real-world conditions, but once operational, are relatively inexpensive to scale to more games and more users. At Epic, our goal is to help game developers succeed,” said Epic Games.

Fortnite Devs To Release A Set Of Tools That Simplifies Cross-Platform Multiplayer

Epic Games plans to launch its cross-platform SDK in the first half of 2019, most likely in the early months of the next year. Also, throughout 2019, Epic Games will release new features for the before-mentioned service. Third-party devs should expect the following:

  • Cloud saves – in Q1 2019
  • Login, entitlements, and social functions – in Q2 and Q3 2019
  • Voice chat – in Q3 2019
  • Parties and matchmaking – most probably in Q3 and Q4 2019

“As you can see from our game and engine efforts, we’re also working on further support for user-generated content, enhanced social features, anti-cheat, and more. Besides these existing account and service integrations, we’re eager to work with partners on further efforts to connect accounts, gaming services, and cloud services for a more seamless experience,” said Epic Games, Fortnite devs, in an official blog post.
