New Internet Explorer Zero-Day Vulnerability Made Microsoft Release A Security Patch

A couple of days ago, Microsoft released a security patch to fix a new Internet Explorer zero-day vulnerability. According to many reports, the IE 0-day security flaw is used massively lately. As Microsoft reported, the credits for discovering and reporting the vulnerability goes for Clement Lecigne of Google’s Threat Analysis Group.

As reported by a security advisory published along with the security patch, the new Internet Explorer zero-day vulnerability permits cyberattackers to execute malicious code on a victim’s computer. Dubbed as CVE-2018-8653, this security flaw is exploitable in web-based environments where a hacker attracts a visitor on an infected site and then runs malicious code on the user’s PC.

According to Microsoft, the cyberattacker would execute the malicious code under the same privileges the user has on a computer. Therefore, if an Internet Explorer user with limited access is lured on an infected site, the hacker also has to execute the code in a restricted environment, mostly contained to simple operations.

Microsoft Released A Security Patch To Tackle A New Internet Explorer Zero-Day Vulnerability

The situation is challenging for Microsoft. The company already patched other IE 0-day vulnerabilities during the last months, namely, the so-called CVE-2018-8611, CVE-2018-8589, CVE-2018-8453, CVE-2018-8440 security flaws. So, a user who did not update its IE with the previous security patches might be exposed to more than just the recently tackled Internet Explorer zero-day vulnerability.

On December 19th, 2018, Microsoft released KB4483187, KB4483230, KB4483234, KB 4483235, KB4483232, KB4483228, KB4483229, and KB4483187 to tackle the new Internet Explorer zero-day vulnerability.

As the winter holidays are getting closer and many IT departments in companies around the world might not have the time to install the security patches, Microsoft also published a security advisory with some workarounds for the IT specialists to use to restrict access to the IE scripting engine until they install the recently released updates.

iPhone Sales Banned In Germany, Too, Over The Qualcomm Dispute

After China banned iPhone 7 and 8 sales after a court judged that Apple infringed the copyright of a  Qualcomm patent, Germany banned iPhone sales, too, over the Qualcomm dispute. The situation is now getting severe for Apple which has also been impacted by the US trade war with China, among other issues regarding its iPhone 2018 models.

According to Engadget, via Reuters, “a court in Munich, Germany ordered an injunction against Apple that will prevent the company from selling some iPhones in the country.” The decision is just a part of the legal conflict between Apple and Qualcomm. However, Apple acknowledged the court’s decision and halted the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 sales across Germany, but the company also appealed the ruling.

Qualcomm accused Apple of copyright infringement and, so far, the chipset manufacturer won in different jurisdictions across the world, most important being China and Germany, now.

iPhone Sales Banned In Germany, Too, Over The Qualcomm Dispute

According to Qualcomm, iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 are Apple’s devices that use Qualcomm technology, even though the phones boast components produced by Intel and Qorvo. Allegedly, Qualcomm is right about that, and Chinese and German courts already ruled against Apple, forcing the Cupertino-based company to halt iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 sales in Germany, as well as in China.

However, the situation faced by Apple in China, due to its dispute with Qualcomm, is more severe than the case in Germany, Accordingly, in China, Apple must seize the sales of more models, including, besides iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 series, iPhone 6, 6S, and iPhone X, too.

The Qualcomm dispute with Apple affected the Cupertino-based company more than everyone imagined because it came at a moment when the US trade war with China also impacts Apple and its iPhone 2018 models are not boasting the expected sales, and many bugs have been reported by users.

The State of Jailbreak and the Closing of the Cydia Store

Jailbreak users were surprised to learn that the Cydia Store will no longer offer paid apps and tweaks. Cydia creator Jay ‘’ Saurik’’ Freeman decided to remove PayPal integration and justified the decision in a post on the official Reddit forums.

The main argument for the decision is that the cost to keep the functionality was bigger than the revenue generated from the items that were purchased. The introduction of PayPal integration also created a lot of friction within the community as some users argued that all tweaks and apps for jailbreak devices should be free in the first place.

The announcement will affect developers that relied on paying users for extra money. Saurik noted that the service was successful at first and all the revenue collected was used in order to maintain the servers that host the repositories offered by Cydia.

The Cydia app will remain available for the foreseeable future but some repositories may close since the cost to maintain them is too high in comparison to their popularity.

On the bright side, it appears that there are still chances for the release of a jailbreak iOS 12.1 version. A developer claims that he has managed to successfully jailbreak an iPhone XS Max, managing to defeat the numerous security checks placed by Apple within the software.

It remains to be seen if the developer will release the jailbreak for free or sell it to interested third-party groups. After all, he may want to receive a reward for his efforts. The release of a new jailbreak version would breathe fresh life into a bleeding community as jailbreak users are missing many of the features introduced with the latest version of iOS.

There is also hope that a public jailbreak build will be released by another developer later in the future as he is now focusing on removing the security restrictions that block the installation of jailbreak iOS.

The future looks bright for jailbreak lovers.

As we can imagine, entire communities have their hopes up for some long-awaited devices. Most of us know that 2019 will come with awesome gadgets, next-generation technology and new items.

Apple fans are very anxious to see what next year will bring for their favourite MacBook – the 12-inch variant. Unfortunately for them, the Cupertino-based company didn’t make any announcement about the new device’s improvements.

However, recent leaks and rumours made their way through the community and help us find out more about Apples 12-inch MacBook. The mentioned MacBook was brought into discussion during an event organized by the developing company in New York on October 30th.

These are the speculations around the 12-inch MacBook

Some voices say that in 2019 we should expect to see updated versions of previous Apple devices (for example, MacBook Air, Mini Mac and iPad Pro). On the other hand, the company doesn’t mention anything about an update for the 12-inch MacBook.

Since the last upgrade for this piece of equipment was released a year ago, we can conclude that the next patch will arrive in the first part of 2019. February or March is considered to be the most suitable period.

The 12-inch MacBook will arrive with modern specs:

  • It will have the 8th generation Kaby Lake chipsets which are famous for speeding up every task and enhancing the video streaming quality;
  • In what graphics is concerned, the new MacBook might be released with Gen11 integrated graphics. This is Intel’s new creation, so it boosts to support 4K video streaming and content under 8K format;
  • The MacBook will offer 16GB RAM. The storage capacity can be enlarged thanks to USB ports (in this case, we are talking about Type-C or Thunderbolt 3),
  • Connectivity is super-fast – up to 40Gbps;
  • MacBook will come with slimmer bezels and a larger display (possibly OLED for a higher accuracy of colours). This measure is suitable with an updated keyboard.
