iOS 12 Jailbreak – What Will Happen to the Reported Bug?

Last year the 360 Vulcan team was congratulated by TianfuCup (@Tianfucup) on Twitter after they won the highest reward of Tianfu Cup 2018 PWN contest. They got the win after they gained full access to iPhone X using a UaF bug in iOS kernel and a type confusion jit bug in Safari.

SorryMyBad (@SorryMyBad) of 360 Vulcan then replied that after the fix he would release more information and this is precisely what happened last week. Information was promised by the security researcher according to RedmondPie all after the reported bug will be patched by Apple.

The iOS 12.1.3 developer beta was released by Apple on Monday as you may already know and not too long after the iOS 12.1.3 public beta 3 followed. It is still unknown whether the SorryMyBad’s reported bug was patched or not, but there will not be long until someone figures it out.

Returning to the bug we heard about from SorryMyBad, it affects iOS 12.1.2 and below according to RedmondPie. Besides that we know for sure that is compatible with all pre-A12 device which means that if you are an iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max owner you can’t benefit from it. Another thing was confirmed by SorryMyBad, and that is that the kernel task port is provided.

GeoSn0w (@FCE365) asked whether or not the kernel task is reported and SorryMyBad offered the answer everybody was hoping for “Absolutely yes.”

GeoSn0w explains why this support is so important. One is allowed to perform arbitrary writes and reads to the kernel memory only with the help of tfp0 ( the kernel task port) that is also necessary to apply the required jailbreak patches. Besides that, users are also advised not to update.

Downgrading from iOS 12 to iOS 11.4.1: Your Perfect Guide

If you’re here, you’re probably among those people who updated their iPhone to iOS 12 and are not pleased with all with it. We come with great news: you can go back to iOS 11.4.1. We’ve prepared some steps for you to follow.

Why should you do it, though?

Everybody knows that iOS 12 comes with some issues that make the overall experience bad. It slows down your device and it uses too much of your battery. You need to keep in mind that you cannot downgrade to the last version of iOS after the digital signature expires.

At present, downgrading is possible. But you need to take into account the fact that you only have about two weeks to decide what do to, before Apple stops signing the iOS 11 version. Also, any kind of change you made while you were using iOS 12 will disappear after you downgrade to 11.4.1.

What will you need?

To downgrade, you’ll need the iOS device, be it iPhone, iPod and iPad. Also, the iOS 11.4.1 IPSW file and a computer with Windows or MacOS.

How to do it?

First, you need to get the firmware from Apple’s website. Make sure you get it from a trusted source (never download it from an unknown site). Then you need to dave the file into your computer. Turn off the the Find my iPhone feature right from the Settings – you find it under your name in the iCloud settings. Then, you have to connect your device to the computer. Then, open iTunes. Click on the restore button, and at the same time hold Alt or the option for Mac and Shift for Windows. Then, select the IPWS file from your computer, and then confirm that you want to make the changes.

Two New iOS 12.1 Critical Vulnerabilities Reported

Like iOS 11 last year, iOS 12 is off to a bad start. In its version 12.1 released at the end of October, critical vulnerabilities and bugs are even more than in the original version.

Delivered at the end of October by Apple, the first update of iOS 12, the iOS 12.1, has two critical flaws. One gives access to recently deleted photos via the Safari browser, while the other allows users to bypass the Face ID and Touch ID authentication functions to access contacts. Other bugs are related to Wifi and battery management.

iOS 12.1 Launched With Several New Features

New features in iOS 12.1 include group conferencing management via FaceTime, 70 new emojis, and support for dual SIM for eSIM on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, the iPhone 2018 models Apple rolled out earlier.

Designed for iPhone and iPad, iOS 12 was presented at WWDC 2018, Apple’s annual developer conference, on June 4th. After a series of beta versions, iOS 12 was launched on September 17th, 2018. With this new version, the Cupertino-based tech giant promises increased performance. “Even if the environment is very busy, applications will be able to launch twice as fast. As for the keyboard, it will run 70% faster,” Apple estimates.

From the iPhone 5s released in 2013 to the latest iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max released in parallel with the new iOS version, “iOS 12 will optimize the speed as no other version has done so far.”

What’s Next For Apple? iOS 13

While the two before-mentioned critical vulnerabilities are not quite very threatening as they cannot be done remotely, they are still two of the most severe leaks of privacy found in an iOS version.

On the other hand, the fans are already turning their attention towards the next iPhone and iPad operating system, iOS 13 about which many rumors have already emerged on the Internet, about one year before its release.

iOS 12 Jailbreak by Luca Todesco Ready with Confirmation on iPhone XS Max

After Apple releases a new version of its iOS, there are always people that expect something else to happen soon. We are talking about people in the jailbreak community and until now they have been waiting for an iOS 12 jailbreak. They waited patiently ever since Apple started beta tests on the software.

What did they look for?

In order for iPhones and iPads to be jailbreaked, developers have to find some exploits. They achieved this through Luca Todesco, a developer renowned for jailbreaking, managing to jailbreak the iOS 12 on an iPhone XS Max. It is especially impressive since this model comes with the A12 Bionic chipset that added extra security measures.

Overcoming restrictions

Luca Todesco tweeted last month that he ‘pwned’ the software, even claiming that he did it from the first try without having to alter the code from his earlier project. This translates into Apple not making any major changes to iOS 12 compared to the beta version.

To support his claim, Todesco also released a video. At the time he said that we have to wait a few weeks for him to share the full details.

Confirmation

Todesco used Twitter again to confirm the reality of the jailbreak. For this, he used his own iPhone XS Max that ran iOS 12. The beta exploit was still relevant on the final build and by doing the jailbreak, he validated the lack of hardware restrictions that were supposed to prevent him from liberating the device.

Besides jailbreaking the phone, Todesco also restored the stock version of iOS 12. He still uses the XS Max, describing it as a ‘damn fine piece of hardware’. He neither confirmed nor denied that he would release the jailbreak to the public. We just have to wait and see.

iOS 12 Augmented Reality and New Performance Reports

The latest software update for iPhones and iPads was released this year, on 17th of September, following the iPhone XS launch event. We’ll take a look at the most recent operating system from Apple, iOS 12, in order to see how different its features, interface, ease of use and performance are from the previous OS.

Augmented reality in iOS 12

If you are interested in AR, then iOS 12 should definitely suit you better than the previous operating system. A new file format, named USDZ, allows designers and developers to generate their own AR experiences, which can be easily shared. More than that, the News app is now featuring AR content. Also, thanks to the newly updated ARKit 2, you can take measurements of a real-world object by simply using your iPhone’s camera and a new app called Measure. Shared experiences are also made possible through ARKit, which means that while playing an AR game, several players from different iPads can observe the gameplay from their own perspective.

Differences when it comes to performance

Compared to iOS 11, Apple’s newest software is meant to run faster and better. The performance of the processor is supposed to be increased only when the device needs it, while being decreased in the remaining time, so that the life of the battery will be preserved. According to the tech giant, this is especially true for older phones.

What about the Photos app?

From what we’ve seen, the Photos app in iOS 12 has more categories than in iOS 11, so it should have a bigger success than before. Here are the things that iPhones running the new operating system offer: playgrounds, cars, babies, forests, aquariums, lakes, sport and stadiums. So you can clearly see that Photos is getting a little bit smarter in iOS 12. Something else that is different in iOS 12 is that your iPhone can now, in fact, suggest you whom you should share your pictures with.

FaceTime – the exciting feature that gives us group video calls

The long-awaited feature that allows people to engage in group video calls is finally here. Any user can now video chat with as many as 31 other people at the exact same moment, which is pretty cool. This is a great new option and there were many people requesting it before, so the fact that Apple has finally brought this to its users along with the release of iOS 12 is great. There is, however, one thing that doesn’t necessarily look good when using this feature – the way the tiles move around on the screen, while changing their sizes at the same time as users speak. Hopefully this will be improved in the future.

What’s new about Siri

Even though Siri in iOS 11 is not that bad, the improved Siri in iOS 12 has a new feature that is pretty interesting. On some occasions, the shortcuts that are normally created by voice will be generated by third-party apps and you even have the option to create your own shortcuts.

Animoji in iOS 12 – new changes

There is a clear difference between Animoji in Apple’s previous operating system and the current one. iOS 12 allows users to create their own animated emoji, which is called Memoji, whereas in iOS 11 we only had a pre-established set of Animoji. So this is great news for fans of this fun feature.

Combating device addiction

When it comes to digital wellbeing, the features that are meant to fight against device addiction, iOS 12 has a new addition, a new submode called Do Not Disturb During Bedtime, which also allows users to set an ending for the DND option by adding a time and a location. Moreover, notifications are also grouped in iOS 12 by app, thread and topic, so this will definitely be helpful for a lot of people. There is also an exciting new feature, Screen Time, which lets people monitor their device usage by app category, time of day or night and others.
